Star Wars Characters Coming To Soulcalibur

Soulcalibur IV [http://www.namcobandaigames.com/].

Two famous Star Wars characters will be added to the franchise as part of the "monumental collaboration," with the Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Vader appearing as a "guest character" in the PlayStation 3 version of the game, while Jedi Master Yoda will turn up in the Xbox 360 edition.

"It is quite rare that two publishers of this caliber are able to collaborate on this level to create a top notch entertainment experience for next-generation platforms," said Namco Bandai Executive Vice President Makoto Iwai. "In the entertainment industry, LucasArts possesses some of the most recognizable characters and franchises in the world. We're thrilled to integrate their historic characters into one of our most treasured brands."

Kevin Kurtz, LucasArts director of marketing, added, "We're very excited to work with Namco Bandai and be a part of their efforts to take Soulcalibur to the next level. Adding our iconic Star Wars [http://www.starwars.com/]characters to Namco Bandai's great game franchise is a match made in heaven, and we think Darth Vader and Yoda will be formidable opponents in the game."

Soulcalibur IV will feature high-definition graphics, an all-new battle system, increased customization options that will allow players to personalize their character's appearance and performance and for the first time ever will allow customized characters to take part in online combat. Soulcalibur IV is set for release in summer 2008 for the PlayStation 3 [http://www.xbox.com].

This reminds me of playing as Spider-Man and Jango Fett in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. Perhaps next, we'll get Batman in Street Fighter.

Call me a nerd, but howabout historical or mythological personalities in SC? I'd love to see Mitsurugi go up against Miyamoto Musashi or Gilgamesh, but I suppose that's what the character-creator is for. Still, Yoda & Vader seem like odd choices.

It seems to me like a ridiculous effort to get more people to buy the games through use of liscensed characters.

I'd still totally play as Darth Vader though.

There's room for Kratos, Link, the guy from Gladiator, one of Halo's Elites, a Warhamme5 40K Space Marine equipped with a chainsword, the twat who fights with a giant key in one of those japanese RPG games, etc.
Feels like prostitution.

Bandai/Namco's collaboration on this feels really inappropriate. Considering the pseudo-historical feel of the Soul Caliber games then throwing in historical or mythological characters is fine, but the Star Wars mythology doesn't count! And how do you justify this? The Emperor wanted the Soul Edge, so Darth Vader lands in Syria, kills Saladin, and marches Imperial StormTroopers out of Damascus. They'll probably come up with something better, but it will still feel forced. Somehow I worry that it will actually sell better because of this gimmick, which will then inspire Bandai/Namco to continue in these bizarre cross-overs. How about X-Wings in Ace Combat? Actually, if they did that I'd burn down their American offices.
