James Bond Finally Meets Defeat

James Bond, the world's greatest spy, has met his match in something far more dastardly than a mere super-villain: Tough economic times and the uncertain future of MGM.

Dr. No [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julius_No] in 1962, represent the most successful movie franchise of all time; yet after all those years, all those victories and all those women, the greatest threat ever to face the redoubtable Mr. Bond is not some mad scheme of world conquest but an entirely non-nefarious downturn in the worldwide economy.

MGM [http://www.mgm.com], the studio behind the movies, is struggling with a massive debt load and has reportedly been hit hard by the recession. A sale of some or all of its parts is being pursued but doesn't seem to be going as well as hoped; as a result, production of the new Bond film has brought to a halt.

"Due to the continuing uncertainty surrounding the future of MGM and the failure to close a sale of the studio, we have suspended development on 'Bond 23' [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1074638/] indefinitely," Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said in a statement. "We do not know when development will resume and do not have a date for the release of 'Bond 23'."

The announcement is a bit of a surprise, given the success of Quantum of Solace [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0185819/]. Craig's third Bond film was expected to come out next year and while there's no doubt that it will eventually be made, fans of the film could be in for a much longer wait than expected.

Damn. Hopefully it'll pick up if someone buys the franchise from them. The two Stargate movies have had similar treatment.

Really? A picture of Dalton with this article?

I am saddened to hear this news - Craig was doing a bang-up job, (literally) and I would have liked more, sooner.

...Why the hell haven't I ever seen any Bond movies?
Well, I might have played the N64 game, so I guess this negatively affects me.

I never really liked Bond all that much. The only thing Bond related that I actually enjoyed was the goldeneye game.

So they're stopping a film franchise that has made a profit with every film its put out?

I really don't understand the reasoning here

Oh god, we may have to pull a Chuck renewal style petition here. Quick how fast 240,000 nerds assemble to keep Bond movies going. Can we afford to sent 1,000s of Omega brand watches and Aston Martins to MGM to show our dedication to Bond? We can't let this hallmark of cinema die!

We have all the time in the world. -James Bond

Perhaps as a community we should make a recession bond fan movie... Or maybe not when I consider the insanity which would follow.

I'm still personally pissed off at bond for having a vodka martini 'Shaken' Not stirredthe pretentious son of a...

Yay they dont get to butcher my childhood hero anymore! Casino Royale wasnt bad but I couldnt sit through the entirety of Quantum of Solace. I miss my baddies who want to take over the world with a laser beam which they fund by mutating dogs to cheat at races while they invest in a huge zeppelin to host the races while the laser beam is transported throughout the world to shoot microscopic holes in the earth to implant minature worms to turn into giant monsters which will level entire cities unless the superpowers of the world give Dr. Payne billions of dollars to complete his martian city.

I got a million of em!

I see. They are out of money so they decided to suspend a movie that is guaranteed to make a profit, only to release what I assume to be fairly [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeepers_Creepers_3:_Cathedral] mediocre [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bunyan_and_Babe] movies [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cabin_in_the_Woods] on time. Hollywood outsmarts us once again.
