PSP Skype Delayed on Eve of Launch

Just hours prior to its scheduled launch, Sony delayed release of the Skype service for users of its PSP hand-held.

Two microphone packages had been prepared for launch day, but both of them failed to meet Skype specifications.

The company had prepared two first-party microphone packages for launch day, but neither of these has met specifications defined by Skype. As a result, Sony said it decided to postpone the launch of the service until a solution can be found.

"Solutions to enable users to start using Skype features and services on their PSP are being sought for and will be announced in due course," said a Sony official.

The product launch was confirmed by Sony at CES earlier in the month.

The Skype software boasts 246 million registered users. It enables free voice communication via internet connection. According to Sony Europe, the Skype-tied service will still appear before the end of the month in that region.

Correction: We've received word from Skype representative Chaim Haas that this delay will occur only in Japan.
