Red Dead Redemption Animated Film Coming This Weekend

Fox is broadcasting a 30-minute animated Red Dead Redemption [http://www.amazon.com/Red-Dead-Redemption-Xbox-360/dp/B001SH7YMG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1276625981&sr=1-1] film this weekend, a prequel to the videogame that launches the tale of reformed outlaw John Marston.

Set in 1910, the Fox [http://www.fox.com] special Red Dead Redemption follows the early days of Marston's pursuit of his former comrade Bill Williamson and his first encounters with his new traveling companions, including a "violent sheriff and a colorful, mentally deranged grave robber." They track Williamson to an abandoned fort, where their plan to capture him leads to a "dark, surprising twist."

The film was directed by The Proposition [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0384825/], a very Red Dead-sounding affair in which a captured outlaw is given nine days to track and kill his older brother, or his beloved younger brother will be hanged.

Great. Now I've got two Westerns to watch.

The Red Dead Redemption animated film will air at midnight ET/PT on May 29 and viewer discretion, as you may have guessed, is advised.

Will it be broadcasted in Britain?
If not, to youtube! This should be handy to watch before I play the game.

What's with all of the video game movies as of late?

Anywho, prequels are pretty good to set the scene, but shouldn't the game be able to set up everything first without having to watch a movie to get the whole story of what happened BEFORE...?

They can still make a prequel for it....

Sure they can, but that doesn't preclude a prequel. There's always a "before." Not that it's necessarily a good idea, but I don't think it necessarily speaks ill of the game (or whatever original source material you're considering) if someone comes along and produces some form of follow-up work.

(That said, I generally loathe prequels, sequels and the drive to make everything a "trilogy" these days. But in this case I'm more willing to give it a chance because it looks like it might be a serious creative effort rather than just a quick cash-in.)

Cool. I'll try and watch this, assuming there's a way to do so from Britain.

On a side note, The Proposition is fantastic.

Why on Fox of all things?
That was my first thought, too: "Why the hell is this airing on Fox?" Especially since Rockstar has a streaming video player on their Social network. Put it on the net, damnit.

Strange that it's broadcasting on Fox, but that's not the issue here. How are the gamers in Britain going to see it? I'm guessing youtube or some other internet site...

For those of you saying that since RDR is already out the prequel is coming out too late, consider the Star Wars prequels. Sure, they weren't so hot, but if they had come out FIRST, Vader being Luke's father in Ep. V wouldn't have had the same impact. Sure, you may have still felt Luke's pain and anger, but it still wouldn't have been shocking. I've been really good about avoiding RDR spoilers (I'm about 70% of the way through the game) but perhaps there are elements in the game that would've been dulled had we known the events of this prequel show first.

Other examples of telling a story out of order being important include the movie Memento, the anime series Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, to name a few.

Loving the game so far, plan to beat it so I can watch the show. Here's hoping for the best.

Umm... that's not a prequel, from the synopsis. That's the whole opening third of the game.
Agreed. Maybe there's more to it than than. Maybe what we played is like the second time he's tried to get Williamson. Though they didn't mention this in the game, so....

You'd expect a prequel to show him running with the gang, maybe when and why he left it, which, as alluded to in the game, sounds like it would be a great thing to see.

As far as The Proposition is concerned, any of you who haven't seen it, SEE IT. It's basically Mad Max as a Western (and no, I'm not just saying that because it takes place in Australia. Watch it and tell me I'm wrong.) Fans of RDR will definitely enjoy it.

And don't be put off by the fact that it's set in Australia. It's one of those quirks of history that the Australian Outback and the American West in the late 19th century had very similar things going on, for the same reasons. The Proposition is as Western as a Western movie can be, even if it's set in the Far Southeast.

Well the Proposition and The Road are both great films, so I see no reason why this shouldn't be :D

Looking forward to seeing this. I'm a fan of Hillcoat's work since I saw The Road last year. I've got it set to record on my DVR, so I just hope that it turns out good.

That'd be fine if it was a prequel in that sense, but by the description it delves into the story.
