Here's Your Cheat Sheet for the Green Lantern Movie

Warner Bros. has revealed a surprisingly deep amount about the plot of its upcoming Green Lantern movie, as well as who the film's villain will be.

Warner Bros. has been rather tight-lipped about the Green Lantern movie. Up until now, the general public has learned little about the film aside from occasional press releases revealing various casting choices (such as Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan and the delightfully evil Mark Strong as Sinestro), but Warner Bros. has suddenly decided to reveal a ton of information, including a plot summary.

Surprisingly, it sounds like Sinestro isn't going to be the film's main villain. Instead, he's going to be Jordan's mentor/trainer who will help the rookie Green Lanter go up against Parallax, the living embodiment of fear from the comics:

"In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan.

Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before. But Hal is clearly the missing piece to the puzzle, and along with his determination and willpower, he has one thing no member of the Corps has ever had: humanity.

With the encouragement of fellow pilot and childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), if Hal can quickly master his new powers and find the courage to overcome his fears, he may prove to be not only the key to defeating Parallax... he will become the greatest Green Lantern of all."

I'm not entirely sure Parallax works as a movie villain, since the creature first surfaced by inhabiting Hal Jordan's mind, forcing him to go somewhat nuts and, you know, kill off the entire Corps back in the 1990s. The creature may be a little too abstract to work in a film without some Hollywood retooling. This is an origin story, though, and Jordan wasn't exactly aware of how deep Sinestro's nastiness went for a while in the comics.

A safe guess would be that Sinestro will be set up to become the main villain in the movie's sequel, provided that the first film is successful enough to get a follow-up. That's a shame, because Sinestro has proven to be such a great villain over the years, especially under Geoff Johns' writing tenure with the comic. The recent "Sinestro Corps War" story arc was pretty epic and showed just how Machiavellian the character could be, too.

From the sound of things, Sinestro and Parallax aren't going to be the only antagonists Jordan will be facing in the movie. Angela Basset has been cast as Amanda Waller, the woman behind Suicide Squad in the comics, and Peter Sarsgaard is going to take on the role of psionic villain Hector Hammond.

If the movie is done right, it sounds like it's going to be stuffed to the gills with awesomeness.

I'm normally a Marvel man, but Green Lantern is one of my favourite DC characters. Looking forward to this.

Also, my man-crush on Ryan Reynolds grows ever stronger...

If he can't do Deadpool, I might cry though.

I LOVE green lantern. But I have a dislike of Hal Jordan, I'm more a John Stewart kind of guy. Maybe it's because, like you said, Hal's a dirty traitor, but I'm not bitter at all.

What does that even mean? Humanity? Is it because we taste like chicken?

Meh. Jordan has always worked best as a villain, not as a hero. Can't say I'm too stoked for this one, even though I like Ryan Reynolds... Green Lantern's always been one of the blander heroes in my opinion. Maybe it's the over-Americanized super peace keeper bit, I don't know... something about the concept and the behavior just puts me off.

Yikes, I'm the polar opposite of you buddy. Can't stand Jon Stewart, I've always been torn between Hal Jordan and Kyle Rayner.

WHOA! Amanda Waller is appearing in this movie? Sweet. I never cared for the Cadmus Project inside the mainstream DC Comics, but Amanda Waller was actually my favorite character in Justice League Unlimited. That's saying a lot considering she was sharing screentime with the likes of Batman, Superman, The Joker, Darkseid, Despero and etc. Even more impressive was the fact that she it is a non super powered black woman in a suit who spoke somewhat monotonously. But she kicked so much ass.

Although I'm not sure about the casting of Angela Bassett as her. Bassett's is an astounding actress, but too thin, young, and pretty for my idealized image of her. Besides, I'll always imagine CCH Pounder's voice.

Wtf? Angela Basset as Amanda Waller...the Cadmus lady from the recent justice league series (i know she's probably already established in the comics long before the series so stow it)

Why not get...you know the voice actress who plays her part so well, and actually LOOKS like the Amanda Waller they've created. I mean, holy crap haven't they seen her role as pretty much the same character in Warehouse 13??

I mean come on...what would you prefer playing Amanda Waller

(This picture is in higher quality on the IMDB website, but the bastards won't let me right click it /fume so here's the link http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2284423168/ch0156914 )

This is like doing a cast reuniting for the 90's batman cartoon and NOT getting Mark Hamill to play the Joker; its down right sacrilege is what it is! /nerd rage

Not big into Green Lantern myself but I think it's great that they are really going all out on the fact it's all about intergalactic space police wars and such. If this movie is half as good as the Last Starfighter I'll be happy.

And CCH Pounder Should play Waller just because she's awesome. Awesome name, awesome voice, awesome awesome.

Wow...Reading that has really turned me off this movie. I'm a huge Green Lantern fan and have read everything from the Geoff Johns era but this movie sounds like it doesn't even make sense. You can't have Parallax as a villain on his own. For starters he can't do shit all without a host. The only way they can have Parallax work is if it turns out that Sinestro has been working with Parallax all along in an attempt to harness the yellow lantern.

I am very excited, I have faith that they will pull this off well as Geoff Johns has been in a consulting and advisory position with DC for some time. Also who wants to see the Blackest Night Justice League Movie?

Using a villain and having him played by Mark Strong...then not having him be the villain? What is this, sacrilege? Anyone else suspecting the old "mentor is really the evil one" plotline?

Pretty sure that was Sinestro's plot in the comics anyway, he was once the greatest and most powerful of the lanterns.

Green Laturn always seemed like a cheap hero to me. I mean he can technically do anything with his ring he wants, so I don't find him very interesting. It's the same problem I have with Superman. How do make a fight interesting when the hero is invincible?

By having Superman fight someone who can actually hurt him on his level, without the plot device known as kryptonite.

This is very close-minded thinking about the character most people seem to have. And Green Lantern is no different: the character's ring is powered by his willpower and a portable battery source that he uses to recharge the ring. He loses those, and he's a sitting duck. Not every single DC hero can be Batman, but that isn't saying they don't have their share of weaknesses and set power levels.

Of course, if you don't care about superheroes in general, then I'm just wasting my time rambling away...
