GDC 2008: Guitar Rising Flyby

Wow. When I first saw this, I figured it was an ad for Gibson guitars mocking the Guitar Hero/Rock Band craze. If they can make it work, this would be amazing both as a game and as a tool to teach people how to play an actual guitar. Plus, it would give gamers a snappy comeback to all the people who say, "Sure, you can play Guitar Hero, but can you play a real guitar."

People are doing this with a lot of instruments, here's one for Piano Wizard, a game that teaches you how to play piano on an electric keyboard:

I think they're working on a guitar version too, it doesn't look like it's the same group though.

Yes! I actually quit playing Guitar Hero because it just made me mad I wasn't learning how to play a real guitar. Now it will be really awesome when/if people make their own songs.

Yes, Guitar Wizard is being developed by the same folks as Piano Wizard was -- They're going by "Music Wizard Group". See MusicWizard.com.

Guitar Rising only has 30 songs included. Guitar Wizard will allow you to download any MIDI file off the Internet and install it into the game. It's real music, a real instrument, and you learn real skill.

See a live demo of the prototype by searching for "guitar wizard" on YouTube.
