60% of Kids Have Had a Bad Online Experience

The internet can be a pretty weird place for an adult, so imagine what it's like if you're a kid.

The Norton Family Report [http://www.symantec.com/content/en/us/home_homeoffice/media/pdf/nofr/Norton_Family-Report-USA_June9.pdf], a survey conducted by security company Symantec, has shown that six out of ten children has had a negative experience online.

The survey asked 2,800 children aged between 8-17 from all over the world about their online activities, and discovered that more than half had been the victim of cyber bullying, been exposed to inappropriate content, or propositioned to meet up with someone they met online. The survey also found that a third of all children felt anger, fear, or worry over a negative online experience and a fifth felt embarrassment and regret.

"As a professional Internet safety adviser, even I am surprised by some of the findings in this new report," says Norton Internet Safety Advocate, Marian Merritt. "Parents do worry about predators, but they seem to be overlooking more common threats, such as cyber bullying."

"Technology is part of the solution, but a lot of it is about good parenting. The singularly most effective way to help keep your children safe online is to have an ongoing dialogue with them. There's so much we can do to make sure our children have a positive experience online. This report shows us where to focus our efforts right now."

I'm not a statistician, but I can't help but feel like the published results don't paint a completely accurate picture of the data collected. While I have no doubt that the survey was conducted properly, lumping the data from fourteen different countries together - especially when one of the countries is China - seems like it would skew the results quite a lot when you consider the very different social climates.

I've been cyberbullied by some 30+ year olds when I was 15. Pretty much just showed how mature they really were. Oh, and a pedophile started talking to me on AIM once. From everything they warn you about with them on the internet, I thought he would have been smarter and less obvious than he was...

Surely by bad experience means that they couldn't find the free porn sites

That's what it was like when I was younger

This has been known since online gaming with headsets came into being.

Xbox Live just exacerbated the problem.

And I'm willing to bet at least half those kids also participated in "cyber bullying", something I find absurd since its an online voice. It can't hurt you in any way. AT ALL!

Don't like them? Leave the damn party, then you don't have to deal with them again.

Because the problem is limited to Xbox Live.

Clearly.

You have no idea what it is, do you?

My first reaction is:

Only 60%?
Seems a little low, doesn't it? Every time a kid joins voice on an Online FPS, they're ridiculed to death...

Other than flame wars, i'm apparently in the 40%; unless "Exposed to inappropriate content" includes me intentionally viewing tentacle porn...

Sounds reasonable. Most people who go on the internet don't understand that whatever someone says on there is not to be taken seriously. I have never actually cared about getting insulted online, it means nothing.

How many kids have had bad real life experiences? I would say it is more than 60%. I'm calling "The internet is all about the rape of your family" propaganda on this.

Don't you just love these online statistics pointing out the obvious? I know I do, because they remind me of how much I care; which is about 4-5%.

And its caused by the other 40% smack talking on Xbox Live
Part of me thought that, then I also thought about when someone say makes a thread like an idiot on the escapist saying "lol, look a ma utub vidz, like plz" and we all collectively tell him to go away. That might count as a bad experience.

Still I must ask, how much of these bad experiences could they have avoided themselves? By this I mean, did they need to click the link to 2girls1cup when their mate said it was totally gross etc. I'm asking, how many of the situation where out of their control.

"Bad experience" seems awfully vague, and therefore almost completely useless in terms of any kind of analysis.

THIS JUST IN: 235 OF A SURVEYED 600 CHILDREN HAVE BEEN SAD AT SOME POINT IN THEIR LIVES.

Narrowing it down ("Have you been bullied via the internet?" "Have you been approached inappropriately by an adult?" "Have you been teabagged?") might help.

But... the disclaimers say you have to be 18 or older! You broke the law of the internet!
you filthy, filthy bast- okay, I did it too. Don't tell anyone!

I guess these 60% are only the ones who were ashamed to confess they looked at it intentionally. Or religious zealots. Or strange, strange persons.

And our next contender for 'Pointless experimentation of 2010' is:
Everyone is going to have a negative experience on the internet. School is no different and that's a hell of a lot more of a secure and safe place.
