38 Studios Licenes Unreal Engine 3 For MMOG Project

Unreal Engine 3 [http://www.38studios.com/] for use in its upcoming MMOG.

The original IP from the minds of R.A. Salvatore and Todd McFarlane will incorporate "multiple media forms" along with the MMOG to create a world of fantastical characters, creatures and experiences. Prior to the deal with Epic, 38 Studios had licensed the server-side BigWorld Technology Suite [http://www.bigworldtech.com/] to power its back-end requirements.

"Epic's Unreal Engine 3 is best-of-breed, empowering developers with superior content creation tools, extensive middleware integration and exceptional visual quality and rendering," said 38 Studios President and CEO Brett Close. "Epic gets what it takes to make great games, and its Unreal Engine 3 toolset will allow our development team to prototype efficiently and achieve the signature visual quality and excellence we are striving for."

Jay Wilbur, vice president at Epic, added, "38 Studios really wanted to push the envelope with their client-side technology. Unreal Engine 3 will enable them to quickly iterate and define their look using high-end graphics and toolsets, integrated middleware and collaborate with an entire community of developers. 38 Studios is comprised of some of the industry's top technological and creative minds, and we look forward to seeing what they do with our engine."

No details about 38 Studios' mysterious MMOG have been released, but the company said the game is currently slated for released in late 2010.
