Mario Kart Saves Child From Blindness

Is playing the Nintendo DS now a miracle cure?

Nintendo just doesn't get bad press. A story has come out of the UK that alleges a child's daily play of Nintendo DS [http://www.amazon.com/Mario-Kart-DS-Nintendo/dp/B000A2R54M/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1277665880&sr=8-2] helped prevent him from going blind.

Six-year-old Ben Michaels has suffered from amblyopia, or severe lazy eye syndrome, from the time he was four years old. This means that the eyesight in one of his eyes had been gradually decreasing, and he is forced to wear an eyepatch over the good eye to help the lazy eye work harder.

After playing Mario Kart for two hours a day for a sustained amount of time, his eyesight has reportedly improved 250%. His mother says: "When he started he could not identify our faces with his weak eye. Now he can read with it although he is still a way off where he ought to be."

A representative from the Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital explains that playing videogames can improve weak eyesight due to the repetitive eye movement involved, which can increase focus. Not only that, but it's incredibly easy to get children to engage themselves in a videogame. Admittedly, the improvement in Michaels' eyesight could be related to focusing on using his patch more, but there is also likely a "physiological improvement from perceptual visual learning," says the representative.

Talk about a story that Nintendo can use for positive PR spin. Not only is the Nintendo DS able to educate children [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/99289-Miyamoto-Focusing-on-Getting-DS-into-Schools], it can also save them from blindness. And my mother always told me videogames would make me go blind.

Ha, that's just awesome.

And yeah, it has been pretty much a universally used statement that videogames, and electronics of any kind slowly make you lose your eyesight.

What do you think now, parents?

I'm not surprised his other eye got a workout, what from keeping track of the other karts, items, and the frequent twists and turns that Mario Kart tracks tend to make.

Good for Nintendo, I suppose.

Wait, the Daily Mail? Isn't that the one that published the story of the mum that bought her four children a single DS and called video games a toxic drug when she found the four of them arguing over the brand new toy they had to share? [http://www.mcvuk.com/news/30482/Daily-Mail-takes-another-potshot-at-games] Hypocrisy much?

I had lazy eye syndrome. Let me tell you... that eyepatch is not nearly as cool as it should be.

OT: This is hilarious and epic.

I had to go back and check... Yes it was from the Mail...

I was absolutely convinced it was like physically impossible for the Mail to produce a positive story... Let along one on Video games!!!

Saves me from boredom almost every day so it's great it can actually save someone from an actual medical affliction.

Well if it's about making the eye work harder, of course videogames are an excellent way to do that!

Although I doubt there is anything special about Mario Kart over most other videogames
