Budget Battles Baffle BioShock Blockbuster

The planned BioShock [http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dvideogames&field-keywords=Bioshock&x=0&y=0] movie is apparently stuck in budgetary limbo as producer Gore Verbinski says he's trying to figure out how to keep costs down while staying "true to the core audience."

Remember the BioShock film? Take-Two Pirates of the Caribbean [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/83749-Take-Two-Signs-BioShock-Movie-Deal] man, who stayed on as producer, said he's still trying to make it happen.

"We're working trying to make it. The problem with BioShock was: R-rated movie, underwater, horror. It's a really expensive R-rated movie," he told IGN [http://uk.movies.ign.com/articles/110/1102680p1.html]. "So we're trying to figure out a way working with [director] Juan Carlos [Fresnadillo] to get the budget down and still keep so it's true to the core audience."

And he's insistent, at this point at least, on keeping BioShock an R-rated film. "The thing is it has to be R, a hard R," he added. "We don't want to dumb it down, we don't want to make it PG-13. We want to keep it really edgy, and it's a huge bill."

Fresnadillo has apparently moved to a new project, Intruders [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1634121/], while the BioShock situation is sorted out, but Verbinski indicated he wasn't interested in retaking the reins if Fresnadillo drops out completely. "We're really down the road with Juan Carlos and right now it's really a budget thing and how to keep the integrity and keep it a Hollywood movie because it could balloon," he explained. "It's a lot. Our first budget was extraordinarily high and we're working on it."

Sounds like he could actually make it good.

Please make it so, the games industry could do with a decent movie <3

That title is full of win.

But yeah, lower budget. Hope it doesn't end up becoming some cheesy horror flick. not that I don't love cheesy horror flicks (i do), but it just wouldn't mesh with this...

Kudos on the title there. If they manage to keep a good budget while keeping the core of it the same as this game this might turn out well. Hopefully keeping it R rated will mean not a lot of bowdlerization will happen to damage the story. Keeping an eye on this for now.

I actually want this video game to be a movie. Hopefully it'll be better than Resident Evil...

It's going to suck.

It's not a good premise for a film because there is no one for the main character to interact with for most of the film. It's story was strong because it combined a really good atmosphere with a bunch of common Shooter facets and twisted them into a story.
It will not work as a film.

Been said a million times before, but you know theres something wrong with film when you can identify and shoot for the rating of a film before you've written a single line of script.

If you're going to keep it true to "core audience" then don't make a movie because it will NOT come close to meeting expectations of this "core audience" because it was too good of a game and too long to make a movie out of.

How could it not be though? That would be like making a L4D and having it PG. Why would any fan watch a PG-13 bioshock movie? If it's true to the game and it's fans, then there must be creepy bloody people nailed to walls and screeching voices ect. Unless you went with the @CokeColaFTW's idea and I agree, that would be pretty cool.

I doubt that a movie has the possibility to create a worthwhile experience. I'd be more interested in a really good bioshock book.

Not sure I understand how "underwater" would be a price challenge... it's not like you spend a lot of time swimming in the game. Leaking water would be easy enough to replicate on a set, and just cover the windows with green screen material and add in a watery city background post-production.

And major points to Mr. Chalk for a five-part alliteration combo. :-D

Thats not the point. The point is they're concerned about the budget because the various ratings are essentially idicators of marketability. They could make a fantastic high profile movie with top notch effects, acting, and writing, but they can't, because to be true to the source material, it needs to be rated R.

While I respect Mr.Verbinski for keeping the Movie near and dear to our hearts, instead of copping out like others have, this movies is going to be.....problematic at the very least.

Genetic Manipulation without Limits? Check.

Insanity and Bloody Violence? Check.

Capturing Children and using them as, practically, slave labor? Check.

Using Convicted men, experimenting on them, and using them as mindless defenders of said children? Check.

I could say more, but the bottom line is, this thing would be.....Hardpressed not to cause controversy. Moral GuardiansX1000. More or less. Take all the time you need Mr.Verbinski, as long as It's AWESOME. I think the Masses of Video Gamers here would understand.

Also, the Title? Awesome.

This project is probably a wasted effort as long as Verbinski is intimately involved. He's a terrible filmmaker, and something tells me he'd have plenty of opinions on how BioShock were to be adapted as a producer.
