Surprise, Kojima's Next Game Could Be MGS5
Hideo Kojima has given further evidence that nothing he says about the Metal Gear Solid series should ever be taken at face value.
A long, long time ago, Hideo Kojima said that Metal Gear Solid 2 was the last game he'd do in the series. Then he made Metal Gear Solid 3, and said that it was the last game he'd do in the series. Then, he made Metal Gear Solid 4 and furiously tried to tie up all the series' loose ends because dammit, this was going to be his last MGS game! And then he made Peace Walker (which started life as MGS5 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/98590-Metal-Gear-Solid-Peace-Walker-Was-MGS5]) and Metal Gear Solid Rising.
And now, in an interview with the CEO of Famitsu publisher Enterbrain, Kojima has admitted that his Zone of the Enders 3 [http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/07/07/kojima_mgs5/].
The exchange between Kojima and Enterbrain CEO Hirokazu Hamamura contains this particular excerpt helpfully translated by Andriasang [http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/07/07/kojima_mgs5/], which really must be reposted in its entirety:
[blockquote]Kojima: "The next thing [in the MGS series] after Peace Walker is something great. It's a revolution."
Hamamura: "A revolution!? Is this in terms of gameplay?"
Kojima: "In terms of gameplay. We'll be doing things that we couldn't do in Peace Walker."
Hamamura: "What can you do?"
Kojima: "You know, don't you? (laughs)"
Hamamura: "No no -- I don't know. What is the time period of the game?"
Kojima: "(explosive laughter)"[/blockquote]
If you're imagining "explosive laughter" in this context as Kojima throwing his head back and laughing like a mad scientist, then good, you aren't the only one. That just seems like the sort of thing that Hideo Kojima would do.
At any case, we should all have learned by now to never ever take anything that Hideo Kojima says about his work on the Metal Gear Solid franchise as truth. He will tell us that MGS5 will be his last game, and then he will make MGS6. It is the way of the world.
