Mega Man Universe Teased As Capcom Crossover Title

The next official Mega Man game may quizzically feature Street Fighter's Ryu and other characters from Capcom's rich history.

Capcom Mega Man's MMORPG announced in June [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/100324-Mega-Man-Explodes-Across-the-Universe]. The bad news is that Mega Man Universe, which will be released as a digital download on both Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network, is not Mega Man Online, but the good news is that Capcom calls it something that will "break the mold and challenge the conventional wisdom of what a Mega Man game can be."

That's according to Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune, who also told GameSpot [http://www.gamespot.com/news/6269312.html] that Mega Man Universe "is something that you have never seen before, and we have included some hints into this teaser trailer." The trailer is very 1990s and starts off showing a Claymation Mega Man blasting away at evil robots. The "hints" Inafune alludes to seem to be when Ryu is shown firing a Hadouken at those same robots, followed by an appearance by Arthur from Ghosts 'N Goblins. Classic arcade machines from Capcom titles such as Bionic Commando are also shown, making me believe Mega Man Universe a possible crossover title that will feature characters from multiple series.

Capcom calls Mega Man Universe "the most creative Mega Man experience yet" where "imagination is the star of the game." More information will evidently be released at the San Diego Comic-Com which runs from July 22-25, but this trailer and these quotes provide plenty of speculation fodder.

Capcom is known for putting characters from all of its series together in the Vs games, so Mega Man could be in for something similar here. Inafune also commented that "when fans finally get to see it, I believe they'll envision their most far-out Mega Man dreams coming true," which makes me wonder if players will get to create their own levels LittleBigPlanet [http://www.amazon.com/LittleBigPlanet-Game-Year-Playstation-3/dp/B002ELCUUG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1279308814&sr=8-1] style. Come next week, we'll find out what Capcom has up its Mega Buster.

I'm confused...the trailer is a little too obscure, but it is a teaser trailer so I can't complain really.

Vague Trailer is Awesome, more like. That video made me more interested in it than anything in the article. I don't even know what it is, and I want it already, just based on that.

Well, at least one aspect of Mega Man connects directly to MMOs: boss loot.

Also, Box Art Megaman needs to at least be a running gag in this game's Easter Eggs.

For some reason I'm thinking that it will be like Super Mario Crossover.

The game will be about playing the classic Megaman games but using characters from other Capcom franchises.

Well, this should be interesting o_O

As for the failure to be an MMO.. well, both disappointed and glad, I guess. Disappointed because a MegaMan MMO'd be pretty interesting, especially if it had a slightly CoH-esque 'make your own robot/reploid/android/carbon.. whatever' system. And glad because.. frankly I don't think the market right now'd make a MegaMan-universe MMO all too viable, or indeed high quality.

Here's a question..

If there were a MegaMan MMO, where/when ought it be set?

Classic era? X era? Zero era? ZX? Battle Network? Legends? Star Force?
Or some bizarre mash-up, ala what the MegaMan MUCK did, throwing together an.. acceptably coherent setting including key elements from as many bits of the franchise as possible while setting things somewhere a bit after the classic series?

.. I think I'll go make a poll topic..

EDIT: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.214101-Poll-Poll-MegaMan-MMO-Setting < Topic made!

WHY ARE THEY STILL MAKING THESE!?

Seriously.
On behalf of the entire gaming industry; I apologize that executive decisions don't revolve around your own personal tastes and opinions.

That said, Capcom is going to continue making "these" until "they" stop selling. Really though... you don't even really know what "this" is yet. So stop your bitching and go somewhere else unless you have something tangible to ask.

Now i want a 2D Megaman fighting game featuring characters from every Megaman Game.

including the Battle Network and Starforce Series.

It would be Epic.

I accept your apology, could I get that in writing from Mr.GamingIndustryOfficialLeader? I want to frame it.

It was my opinion that Mega Man is just a notch above Sonic now.

You're certainly free to print-out my post and have it framed if it means that much to you. I personally won't be making any such effort though. And you're certainly free to have your opinion, but don't act so surprised when something that still sells like hotcakes (even if it's digital hotcakes) gets another sequel. You might be sick of Mega Man games, but the pile of cash raked-in from Mega Man 9 and 10 sales certainly puts your opinion into the minority.
