Is It Real, Or Is It Red Dead Redemption?

Red Dead Redemption's world is in a new time-lapse film that makes it hard to discern what's real and what's not.

Aside from setting 2010 sales records and <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101960-More-Red-Dead-Redemption-DLC-Coming-Soon>getting a slew of DLC, <a href=http://www.amazon.com/Red-Dead-Redemption-Xbox-360/dp/B001SH7YMG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1279560162&sr=8-1>Red Dead Redemption is making even more waves. This time, the game's world is featured in an amazing time-lapse movie that is, for lack of a better word, stunning in its realism.

The movie was created by Digital Foundry (which has done other such videos based on games like <a href=http://www.eurogamer.net/videos/digitalfoundry-assassins-creed-2-time-lapse-video>Assassin's Creed II, <a href=http://www.eurogamer.net/videos/digitalfoundry-fallout-3-timelapse-video>Fallout 3, and <a href=http://www.eurogamer.net/videos/digitalfoundry-crackdown-time-lapse-edit>Crackdown), and it certainly adds a lot of fuel to the fire that is the "videogames as art" debate. While Red Dead Redemption uses the same RAGE engine that <a href=http://www.amazon.com/Grand-Theft-Auto-IV-Xbox-360/dp/B000FRU1UM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1279562158&sr=1-1>Grand Theft Auto IV did, the sheer amount of detail in the natural environment is jaw-dropping. This, combined with an astounding draw distance, often makes it hard to tell this virtual world from the real one.

For Digital Foundry, creating this movie was exceptionally challenging. "Putting this video together required... patience," the group explained. "A full 24-hour cycle in-game amounts to an hour of real time, but you need to record more than that to ensure you get a full uninterrupted capture of the crucial dawn and sunset periods.

"As just one minute of HD capture footage usually weighs in at over 1GB, we opted to capture at just one frame per second, massively reducing the space requirement and requiring so little CPU that the workstation could be used for other things at the same time. 49 shots were taken in total, with 39 making their way into the final edit."

While the sequences with buildings and people in them are easier to discern as CG environments, the ones featuring only natural settings look like they could have come straight out of a nature documentary. While Digital Foundry did a great job of capturing this footage, the real credit should go to Rockstar San Diego for creating such a beautiful &mdash and thoroughly convincing &mdash world.

WOW. I'm a bit shocked. One, that I never noticed all that, Two, that someone took the time to make this, and Three, that I actually recognized all the places.

I'd say even the scenes with people in it look somewhat realistic, since they move about their day and do stuff in a realistic matter.
But yeah, clearly not photorealistic, but still damn impressive. The environment is one of the reasons this game is one of my all time favorites.

aww when i saw the title i thought it might have something to do with the pc release :/ if its ever being released for pc that is :\
I hope we get a PC version too. Not that I'd buy it, I already own it for the console, but I'd like to play it with certain friends that don't own a proper gaming console...

Also, beautiful shots, beautiful game. I love it.

Yeah that is pretty convincing, more then I thought it would be. Naturally when you get the buildings and the people in there it becomes easier to tell that it's CG, but even then it still looks pretty convincing.

Nah, even the nature ones are easy to discern without looking for photorealism, the small bushes are the same shape and size, a videogame staple.

That is pretty cool. I like it, although easy to spot at times, it blends nicely

Meh. Yea it looks pretty great but I wouldn't have com close to thinking any of those shots were real, especially anything that had trees, bushes or grass in them. Water looked pretty damn good though I'll say.

Of this quote, I was not a believer.

Until I watched the video.

Now I believe! Wow, just wow. I never really appreciated the detail Rockstar put into this game to make it so realistic. Then again, it is said that the best effects are the ones you don't notice, that means they're doing their job.

Credit Rockstar with making quite the effort at excellent landscapes, without going the route of Crytek and making a game made for the next(or the one after that even) generation of system that someone else has. Especially considering the chipset the 360 carries is last generation.

The world of Red Dead Redemption looks amazing. There was so much detail put into the scenery.
