Capcom Wants More Street Fighter Movies

Like an old prizefighter who doesn't know when to quit, Street Fighter [http://www.capcom.com/] movies in the future and that someday they might actually make one that doesn't suck.

Remember that hilariously awful 1994 version of Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li [http://www.amazon.com/Street-Fighter-Extreme-Blu-ray-Jean-Claude/dp/B001L2ZSJE/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1279646461&sr=1-6] that actually managed to make the Van Damme flick look not so bad after all? That's the kind of track record that would tempt most people to throw in the towel, but not Capcom's Christian Svensson. He's just getting started.

"There's a book to be written there. This is where I have to be careful," Svensson, Capcom's vice president of strategic planning and business development, said when asked why the Resident Evil films [http://www.amazon.com/Resident-Evil-High-Definition-Apocalypse-Extinction/dp/B000YPUFAQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1279646540&sr=1-1] do relatively well while the Street Fighter movies have been more akin to flaming bags of dog poop left on the vice-principal's front porch. "Let's just say there were a lot of people with different ideas as to what was the best route to take with [The Legend of Chun-Li]. A path was chosen, a result was had."

"A result was had" probably isn't the most heartfelt endorsement you'll hear all day but Svensson did claim that the movie had some value, even if only as an object lesson in what to avoid in future Street Fighter films - and yes, there will be future Street Fighter films. "I think there are some learnings internally that we've taken away from that experience," he said. "I think you'll see some clever live-action stuff that will excite our fans at some point in the future, based on Street Fighter. Let's just say that the book is not yet done on Street Fighter film and video projects."

In spite of his optimism, Svensson also allowed a sliver of awesomely brutal honesty to shine through, revealing that his expectations for the future are, you might say, a little limited. "Hopefully we get one right sometime in the future," he said.

Hopefully we get one right in the future
Im scared......

The only SF movies i really enjoyed were the Anime Movies.

I just hope that they make story's based around the Characters personality from the games.
They have some great characters to work with, there is no need to change them.

We will just haft to wait and hope this turns out ok.

Here's a bit of advice that my dad gave me.

Stick with the source, and listen to the fans rather than the test audience or the auteur-directors.

Chun Li's story is about a headstrong girl that dedicates her life to taking down the man that killed her father.

It's a straight revenge movie that doesn't need a romance, wisecracks, American grunts, robots or guns.

It's JUST a martial arts movie that replays film noir in the light. Film soleil. Poor girl defeats Evil Rich.

That's it.

Ryu is a roadmovie. Ken is a commitment-redemption. Blanka is a fish out of water. Honda/Balrog/Sagat are Rocky films. Vega is a slasher. Rose/Sakura are empowerment.

It's not difficult. You just have to write the source material. Because that's what people love.

The only way that they would be good is if they made movies based on the anime scenes from SFIV and things like that.
Otherwise, it will always be a shitty movie, and I'm genuinely frightened that they think this is a good idea.

Bring back Jean Claude!

No, I am joking. Although Ming-Na as Chun Li made it almost watchable.

I saw an animated SF2 film a while ago. It was nigh-on incomprehensible.

The only good SF movie would be one based off of "El Fuerte":

He's got more charisma than the rest of the SF characters all rolled into one.

I dunno man. The first Street Fighter movie was so bad that it turned into a comedy. Why don't we keep it that way?

Wait... Am I the only one who laughed at both of them?

Is anyone else thinking how many Asylum films there will be as a result of this?

Capcom wants more SF movies? I want more SF movies!!!!

I don't want to argue about how good or bad the first street fighter movie was, but what really matters is that good, bad, or indifferent, it was damn fun. So were the Mortal Kombat movies.

Edit: Oh, and Soul Calibur too. That one would be easy. And Epic.

Their best bet is to make an animated movie. That way the characters can remain larger than life, instead of bringing them down to a "human" level for live-action.

The best Street Fighter movie is still the original anime from the 90's.

Oddly enough Sammo Hung bought the rights to the Soul Calibur movie.

The English translation of this movie is either hilarious or racist and cruel

Well the problem with working with fighting games is that every character is the protaganist and victor if you play them and win. While various fighting game universes have tried to establish a canon storyline despite everything (ie only a couple of endings had any truth). Absolutly terrible storylines are excused due to the simplistic nature of the game and and focus on action. What bits and pieces people think are cool and should be kept depend greatly from individual to individual.

What's more when you reduce a lot of the characters down to concepts it's very hard to re-capture the magic of the video games and the way disbelief is suspended. In a movie it's harder to reconcile a relatively normal martial arts guy taking on some kind of super powered god or ultra-science super robot. This means a lot of the plotlines and conflicts involved in these storylines are going to look and seen ridiculous if developed enough for a live action movie. The ridiculousness of a lot of the stuff translates a lot better into cartoons which is why the various animated versions and comics have done better as well. The visuals just look better and it's easier to deal with things like a guy punching a robot down with Karate or whatever and making it seem natural than with a movie for the most part.

That said I am glad that Capcom isn't ready to give up yet, because if they succeed they will truely be doing something a bit differant. They are experimenting with a kind of martial arts flick despite failures where most producers would have given up.

No more street fighter films until you pay attention to what we want!

Oh boy. If they really plan on releasing a third movie, let's hope they've learned their lesson from the second SF movie. It's the same thing as the second Mortal Kombat movie: crappy movie sequel based off an awesome game that makes the first movie worth watching again.
