Joss Whedon Officially Directing The Avengers

The creator of Firefly and Buffy announced at San Diego Comic Con that he has signed on to direct The Avengers movie.

During a panel at Comic Con in San Diego with J.J. Abrams, Joss Whedon took the opportunity to announce that he is officially helming the superhero team movie, The Avengers. Whedon, creator of Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Firefly, has been a fan of comics for a long time and seems very excited about the project. There is no official timeframe for when the movie will be released, even though IMDB.com [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0848228/] says 2012, and Whedon said that he is still in the planning stage.

"That is not an official thing," Whedon said to the moderator when asked about directing Avengers. "I think because Marvel couldn't afford a press release. So can I just make it an official thing? I'm directing The Avengers!"

The crowd went nuts.

Whedon has been into The Avengers for a long time. "They were one of the first books [I read], back when was George Perez was drawing them. This is a big deal for me," he said.

Whedon said that he got into comic books through his father. "My dad was head writer of The Electric Company," referring to the 80s PBS children's show. "They were going to do 'Spidey Stories' and he came home with a whole bunch of old Spiderman comics when I was about 9. And I was like, sure, hand your son meth."

It's too early in the process for Whedon to comment on his specific take on the movie. There is no script yet, he said that he is still in the outline stage. But he did say that it is interesting knowing who is playing the roles. "The thing that I love about [The Avengers story], the thing that made me excited to do it, is that it is so counterintuitive it is. It makes no sense. These people shouldn't even be in the same room let alone on the same team. And that to me, is the very definition of family."

So they're going to hand the coolest thing in the world to the dude who made the epic fail Doll House? Good lord it's going to suck.....

Edit: Before I upset anyone, this is just my personal opinion. This could possibly be good, but don't expect me to hold my breath.

Well, I suppose it certainly could be worse. What I've seen from Joss I haven't really enjoyed. Never gave Firefly a chance, though.

Hope it turns out well.

Eh I'll give him a chance, like I'm giving Chris Evans a chance at being Captain America, and whoever is to replace Edward Norton as the Hulk. Quite simply, this could go either way...a huge flop or an epic movie...only time will tell.

I will however be destroyed if my Captain America is lame/cocky/jokester.

This is good news. I thought Serenity was an awesome movie, looking forward to see what he does with the Avengers.

Wait, did I walk into the Twilight Zone?
Ahem. ALIEN: RESURRECTION.

No, no Twilight Zone here.

Not to be a buzzkill. But I hope that J.J Abrahms stay the hell away from this movie. Before he mutates it into another slick and stylish piece of crap like Star Trek. Or take all the credit for it, like he did with Lost.

I'm sorry but I have an extremely hard time seeing the avengers actually working out considering the Hulk is a walking deus ex machina in the avengers.
That and Whedon was given so much slack by fans on Dollhouse, I'm sorry but that was probably the most disappointing scifi show to have been on the air in a while; and to pour salt on the wound it killed off another great show (The Sarah Connor Chronicles) that was coming into its own...very much a death on the scale of firefly.

Yeah, I'm kind of confused right now. Normally the members of the Escapist praise him, and all the comments so far have been negative.

Me? I just want to see an action movie. Firefly was awesome, so I hope this is.

I was all prepared to be the only person in this thread to not like him at all. Turns out I'm amongst brothers.

I dislike every single thing he has ever done. Every. Single. Thing.

I'm glad. But, seriously: Alien: Resurrection.
