3D and Young Eyes: "We Just Don't Know"

Game companies are smart to "cover themselves" with warnings about the potential impact of 3D on young eyes but as one expert points out, nobody has any idea what the long term effects will be and it will take many years to find out.

Not long after it revealed the handheld 3DS to the world, Nintendo warned that despite the popularity of preceding DS models among youngsters, this one Nintendo of America [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101482-Nintendo-Says-3DS-Not-Recommended-for-Young-Children] President Reggie Fils Aime said at the time. "This is the same messaging that the industry is putting out with 3D movies, so it is a standard protocol."

Better safe than sorry, as the saying goes, but as Dr. Neil A. Dodgson of the University of Cambridge [http://www.cam.ac.uk/] pointed out, the guidelines are more a matter of hedged bets than an actual warning of danger because ultimately, "We just do not know."

"I imagine that any problems for young children would be common to almost all 3D systems, as almost all of them cause convergence/focus conflict," he explained. "But we do not know if there is actually a problem for young children. Intuitively, one might expect that children should not be exposed for long periods until their convergence/focus mechanisms have been fully trained, but I do not know the age by which that is supposed to have happened."

The only way to find out is to perform long-term experiments on children to see how many of them go blind before they're 30 and that sure isn't going to happen, Dodgson said. "We will only really know if there is a problem if we get a spate of cases where young adults find that they have eyesight problems that can be statistically correlated with excessive use of 3D at an earlier age," he explained.

I guess we'll see what happens in a decade or so - at least some of us, anyway.

I wonder if the fact that a ton of kids movies are being shown in 3D now will make a difference on the sight of the younger population.

But see, this is exactly what's going to happen, the entire paragraph. The 3DS is, in my eyes, that experiment, and the test subjects being the kids who buy them. Then come the cases (and probably lawsuits) with which we can measure accurately.

What if it turns out that 3D actually makes people cross-eyed or something... people will look back at us now and wonder how we could do something that stupid.

I will accept any heresy, myths, false accusations that kill any kind of 3D gaming/Motion Controlled gaming

It truly is going to destroy videogames when EVERY single console gives in to the Wii Pressure

You make a good point, and thus I don't think I will buy anything for at home that's 3D. *You know....if I had the money.* Still, I may go see a few 3D movies, but it's not like I see movies all the time anyway so I doubt I will get anything if not at all.

Yeah, it would be as we today see the paint manufacturers of the early to mid-20th century, for using Radium in their self-luminous paint.

Well, can't the 3D on the 3DS be "turned off?" So maybe it would be less of a problem than some people seem to think?

lol

Translation: We know there is something horribly wrong with the way we present 3D as we have discovered that it causes brain tumors. However since we have already sunk millions and millions of dollars into this product we'll be dammed if we aren't going to try and sell as many as possible until somebody finds out the truth. Until then we will put out this little pamphlet that says "hmmm maybe you shouldn't, but awww shucks go ahead anyways" to hopefully cover some of our future law suits.

See: Tobacco companies in the 1950s-70's

3d movies aren't so bad, really. I mean, its no more than two hours at most twice a month. 3D video games do freak me out though; my step brother had only a slight case of lazy eye, and they fixed it by his wearing an eye patch just a few hours a few times a week.
I'll be damned if I endorse 3d games to kids.

If anything what this article does is again highlight that 3d isn't ready for release yet.

Forget young eyes, I'm 24 and I'll be turning off the 3D on my 3DS when I get it, and the rest of the 3D tech can go die in a fire because I'm not going to pay out the ass for annoying glasses and unknown side effects.
