It Will Be Hard to Go Back to 2D, Says Kid Icarus Dev

Kid Icarus Uprising might be Masahiro Sakurai's first 3D game, but isn't keen on losing that extra dimension.

Masahiro Sakurai, project lead for Kid Icarus Uprising for the 3DS, believes that he is going to find it hard to go back to designing games in 2D after working on 3D game, saying that it will feel "flat."

Sakurai said that he had grown used to working in 3D and likened it to the movie Avatar, where the audience quickly become accustomed to the 3D effects, and stopped consciously noticing them."That's the nature of the way we get used to things as they become familiar," he said. "I would think that going back to 2D after working on a 3D project may be very difficult for me."

It must be a very different challenge to design a game with 3D in mind, rather than to convert an existing 2D game, but it sounds like it's one that Sakurai rather enjoyed. While incorporating depth into a game must be tricky at first, it also must present some interesting and unique gameplay opportunities. As the 3DS doesn't have a release date yet, there's no news on when Kid Icarus Uprising will be available.

I'm fine with this as long as the 3d is not annoying and they maintain the option to turn off 3d

Wait, Masahiro Sakurai is lead designer for Kid Icarus? Sweetmeats. How did I not know this before?

I don't think that he's talking about the visual 3D effect, just designing in a 3D gamespace. Most of his previous work has been 2D. (Kirby, Meteos, Smash Bros.)

EDIT; Added the second quote.

speaking of the point in this quote, how is it different to develop in 3D when 3d is something that can be turned off at any time?

Major boner for 3ds. But knowing Nintendo if I wait a year or 2 a better designed version will come out and all the games will be cheaper. So as much as I want to get in on launch day excitement I'm going to hold off.

I have never played a Kid Icarus game, but I have heard great things. I hope this game can wow me like other Nintendo series.

it depends. are they pushing it "just because"?
Considering that it's a full game they aren't just making in a week and are doing actually work on it I'd say no.

I think the more difficult part would be to have the potential to create something that really makes use of the 3D effect, but then have to be constrained by the fact that you still have to make the game work as well without the 3D. This is especially true in the case of the 3DS as you can just move the slider whenever you want. That would be infuriating particularly if you love the 3D as much as he seems to.

So long 3D will:

- Not be suitable for children.
- Require you to wear these idiotic glasses
- Keep giving me headaches.

I do not want ANY devoleper to forsake those who rather enjoy a enjoyable and not so eye-straining 2D experience.
The 3DS does NOT use glasses to create the 3D effect so yah.....

Well anyway, apparently working with the 3DS seems fun for the developers so we may look forward to innovative games in the future (and no my conservative 2D friends: that doesn't necessarily equal bad).

And if playing the 3DS does cause headaches to some folks out there: there is always the option to turn the 3D off so I don't quite understand the hate it is getting here. People hating on the 3D when they haven't even seen it yet... especially the kind the 3DS is using

Ah well, more power to the people enjoying the 3DS when it comes out with its great 3rd party support, 2GB games with lack of loading times (I am looking at you, PSP...) and all the other positive things about it that I am too lazy to name right now.

For those who still don't get it:
-No glasses
-There is a 3D Depth Slider on the right-hand side of it; you can turn the 3D off if you want to or lessen the intensity of the 3D effect for that matter.

The 3DS ain't just about 3D. It's still awesome even without it... well, it will be once it's released :p

I do believe Mr. Sakurai is the maker of Kirby, so I would predict a 3DS Kirby game is inevitable.

Although it might not be until Epic Yarn is out.

Umm...the question was hypothetical.
