Here Lies Obi Wan, He Died of Dysentery

The Alderaan Trail reimagines The Oregon Trail an even longer time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

Classic computer game The Oregon Trail tasked players with gathering supplies and travelling through the American frontier in search of a new life in the newly-founded territory of Oregon. The path was fraught with danger, and players were constantly in danger of running out of food, being attacked by animals, or getting sick. Fording a river could destroy your wagon, and dysentery would almost inevitably claim at least one of your family members.

Could you ford a river in an X-Wing? Did Luke Skywalker kill those womp rats for food? What killed more, Stormtroopers or dysentery? While it's fairly likely that you have never considered these issues, at least one Star Wars fan has. Matt Marchini's Alderaan Trail art gallery combines The Oregon Trail and Star Wars with delightfully entertaining results.

Marchini's gallery of screenshot mockups does give us a tantalizing look into what would be possible in a Sci-Fi take on Oregon Trail, replacing wagon wheels and gun pellets with power converters and Bantha fodder. Instead of hunting for deer, you might have to slay a few tauntaun. Watch out - a bad motivator on your R2 unit could mean death.

The Alderaan Trail gallery really makes me crave a fully-playable game. Anybody looking for a good project?

Oh man, I miss that game now.

I used to play it instead of working when we were at the computer lab in my school... uh, don't tell my teachers that.

Now maybe I can try a Star Wars version of it. Although I'm unsure if I'll forgive the graphics after how spoiled I've been lately. It's getting harder and harder to care for the older games when the graphics just give you a headache.

Why do I see this game ending with the happy images of getting to Alderaan, and then after the credits roll the planet is destroyed by the Death Star?

Obviously this game should be called the Kessel Run. How many parsecs can YOU make it in?

Back in the 90s the only thing good on a computer was that game. I knew what this article would be about the minute I saw "her lies" and "dysentery"

Canon disagrees both ways over whether Han was making a faulty boast (ie. he's exaggerating and getting his units wrong, wowing Luke but not the wiser Obi-Wan) or whether he was referring to the fact that his ship was exceptionally good at navigation, allowing him to shortcut the Kessel Run, which is a section of space that required sharp navigation to prevent you from crashing (ie. it isn't a straight line and has many routes; a normal route would be greater than 12 parsecs in length).

Please don't bring up this argument again, I've seen perfectly good threads laid to waste over it! The line makes sense either way, and has no reason to be removed.

1 I want. 2 I actually visited the end of the Oregon Trail with an ex and her mom. I happened to make the comment "We made it without anybody dying of disease or hunger!"...sadly...neither had any clue of what I was talking about. Took a while to explain. Made me think twice before saying that the cake is a lie when dessert was offered at dinner.
