Rumor: Is Gotham City Imposters the New Batman Game?

Retailers in the U.K. are responsible for launching a rumor that a new Batman game, Gotham City Imposters, is coming next year.

This one is about as rumorrific as you can get: U.K. retailers WHSmith [http://www.thehut.com/elysium.search?searchFilters=&search=Gotham+City+Imposters] are listing a game called Gotham City Imposters for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The PC version of the game is listed for about $54 while the console versions are about $60, and all three sites are showing a delivery date of January 14, 2011. And aside from that, there is nothing.

The assumption, naturally, is that this is a new Batman game that's somehow slipped under the radar, although Gotham is also the name of a real city in the U.K. and a nickname for New York City, so we could actually be looking at some sort of long-overdue Batman: Imposters [http://www.amazon.com/SimCity-Societies-Pc/dp/B000U88UVS/ref=sr_1_4?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1282677621&sr=1-4] four-part mini-series that began last month.

There's no hint as to who is developing or publishing this alleged game; the truth is that the only thing we know is that it takes place in a city called Gotham and it has imposters of some sort. Arkham Asylum [http://www.wbie.com/], so we've dropped them a line asking about this one and if they happen to get back to us, which is about as likely as the Joker taking up a collection to help build a wheelchair ramp for Barbara Gordon, we'll let you know!

Gotham's a city in the UK?!?!?
I'm moving right now!
Well, uh... actually it's a village.

If this is right then the comic mini-series looks like a promising premise for a game.

Hurm. While the Batman fan in me wants to go "OMG NEW BATMAN GAME MUST BUY NOW!!!!!!" the more rational side of me is doubting this. With Arkham City due for release autumn 2011, I doubt it's the sequel to Arkham Asylum. And games take a fairly long time to develop, so news of this would have leaked earlier, especially if it features a character as high-profile as Batman.

In any case, I'll keep my eye on this.

I feel that this could be a mix up because the sequel to arkham asylum is arkham city. It was the cover article to game informer this month.

Rumors are very rumor-ish. I wanna see some proof before I start saying that a new Batman game is being made.

I was also wondering why I hadn't heard of a city here in the UK called Gotham.

The fact that it turns out to be a village explains that.

As for "Gotham City Imposters", can't say I'm a great fan of that name myself.

Bunk! Bunk, I say! Even if there was a Batman game other than the AA sequel in the works, it wouldn't have been able to fly under the radar with the Dark Knight's current level of popularity, and it sure as hell wouldn't have a title stapled to it that makes my teeth ache upon reading.
