OnLive Planning Wi-Fi Support, Huge Weekend Sale Begins

OnLive is kicking off Labor Day weekend right with the announcement of new features and offers that will save users money.

If you're the OnLive [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/103091-OnLive-Impression-Should-You-Care] cloud gaming service, this will be a great weekend for you. OnLive recently announced that it'll be holding a sale on all of it's titles through Labor Day, that its founding members offer has been extended through the end of 2010, and that Wi-Fi support is in the works.

For current users, every single game is available for 50% off until the end of the weekend. That's a pretty good deal even if you aren't getting a physical copy. OnLive also announced that its founding members program that gives users a free year of OnLive service (aside from game purchases), has been extended through the end of 2010. Sign up by December 31 and you'll be able to use OnLive free for a year.

While those are very good announcements, I'm happier about OnLive's reveal that it's finally planning to implement support for Wi-Fi connections. Currently, the service won't even run if your computer isn't hooked up to the internet through a wired connection. OnLive says that Wi-Fi support will be added "soon" through an initial beta program.

The ability to have sales like this one is going to be key to any kind of success for OnLive, just as massive sales are one of the primary reasons to buy games through digital delivery service Steam. Wi-Fi support doesn't hurt either, just as long as OnLive can get it working properly.

The fact that the "free year" offer has been extended throws up red flags for me.

Sadly, my internet connection isn't stable enough to bother with this. It would always go out at just the wrong time...

Yeah same here. I actually forgot OnLive existed, and I followed its development as part of my Uni course work so God help them if they want actual customers.

No matter what they try to include, or what they use with the service - Its still a bad idea, in general

Huh. If they can get wi-fi to work and if that one year free seems like a good option, I may begin to possibly consider this (maybe). If nothing else I could rent a bunch of games I never got around to playing and just use it like a cheaper Gamefly (if it is cheaper, anyways).

It's not a bad idea, it's just several years ahead of it's time. Though their pricing model really is a bad idea, I'll grant you.

Before we even start talking about Wifi Support, We should learn how much ElectroMagnetic Radiation their machines emits.
Here's an example:

And Here's the explanation why we aren't being told about it:

By the way, one of the only cities that actually tells you how many rads a cellphone emanates is San Francisco...

There really does seem to be a huge emphasis on wifi, if not for laptops/netbooks/IPads, then for turning your cell phone into a wifi hotspot. For OnLive to have themselves taken seriously for the market they want to reach, I'm more surprised they didn't iron out the problems with wifi access sooner. I can understand them wanting to get the word out and attract people to the idea of clouding, and once they had a fair estimate of their clientele they could further decide wherein to invest future income to improve the service, if not broaden their product appeal.

There's nothing wrong with shameless promotions. Some people can reasonably not be interested in this service because of the cost, and sweetening the pot can help turn a few people back over to their side. Hell, it works every holiday weekend for EHarmony!
