PAX 2010: A Very Escapist Mickey

It's no secret that we at The Escapist are excited about Epic Mickey, but it turns out that Mickey is just as excited about The Escapist! In fact, when he's not flinging paint and thinner around The Wasteland, he's practicing drawing our distinctive "E".

Ok, that's not really true. If you were willing to wait in line - or were like me and were lucky enough to get there very early - you could have a genuine Disney artist draw you a customized picture of the character of your choice. I've always been partial to the duck clan, personally, but as I stood there surrounded by huge screens projecting Epic Mickey footage, it seemed wrong to ask for anyone other than the Mouse himself.

Jeffrey Shelly, Character Art Director for Disney Consumer Projects, has been drawing Mickey and his pals for about twenty years now. He says he doesn't have a favorite character to draw: "I just like it when people ask for something different." Perhaps I should've asked for Mickey dancing the merengue with a wombat, instead. Maybe next time.

It's easy to take Disney's artistic brilliance for granted, but watching Jeffrey effortlessly whipping up stunning renditions of legendary characters was a little awe-inspiring. Click on the images in the gallery above to get a better look at Jeffrey, the work in progress, and the final result.

I'm quite jealous I'm not at PAX right now, that was very cool of him to draw.

That's very cool. I wonder what qualifies as "something different". Something off the wall (like dancing wombat), or just an obscure character (like Taran from "The Black Cauldron")?

Iago attacking the Jonas Brothers would be different.

Or the Horned King ;)

That movie was scary when I little.

OT: Cool drawing anyway if it's unoriginal, I wanted to go to PAX as well :(

I would have asked for Bugs Bunny, Surely that's gotta be different enough for a Disney Artist?

In seriousness though, I'm completely envious, I'd love to see the artists behind Disney work their 'magic' right in front of me...
Especially when it's something I asked them to draw...

What about him was obscure? I thought he was the only normal person in that bloody movie.
On topic, great! I'm always jealous of people that get to go to these do's.

I meant obscure in the "far from public notice" sense. Taran was definitely the most-normal person in that movie, but the average Joe probably wouldn't know who he is.

I suggest that we adopt Mickey as our mascot, and see how long it takes for Disney's lawyers to respond. I'm guessing about 2.33 seconds.

hmmm, my senses are tingling.

I think some of the staff working on Epic Micky are users at the Escapist.

I'm generally not a fan of gaming conventions, generally because I'm just not quite compatible with most of the community.

But I categorize PAX with SGC in the series of less conglomerate conventions.

My soul felt depressive after seeing the Konami press conference of E3. "Wan-mirriam twoops"

That's definitely right. Out of 13 of my close friends, only one of them has even seen the film, let alone know the character. It's rather under-rated.

Yay, Lightbox. Awesome bit of Javascript, I think it resizes too fast compared to the original though.

The Mickey Mouse pics are lovely as well.
