MMOGs Coming to PS3: Sony Online Entertainment

The head of Sony Online Entertainment predicts the PlayStation 3 will be a key engine for MMOGs.

In an interview with The Seattle Times, John Smedley said, "I think MMOs are going to be a real strong selling point for the PS3 long term - there's going to be some great ones on the PS3."

SOE has earned a notorious reputation among gamers for its work with a number of franchises, above all Star Wars Galaxies.

More recently the company developed Pirates of the Burning Sea, which Smedley said was "doing OK. I would say that it's kind of for an audience that's really excited about pirates. It's probably not as big as EverQuest 1 or EverQuest 2 but it's actually doing terrific.

In general, he said, MMOGs were "getting more mainstream" and, while about 85 percent male now, would even out to equality down the line.

So has history proven this man an idiot yet? The PS3 debuted in 2006 and there are still no MMO's for it. The new Final Fantasy is in development, but come on...

Well the only MMO I can think of for a console is FF XII. I think what he means is that his console will be looking to get more MMOs. Because frankly play WoW/Guild Wars/LoTRo on the HD TV would be awesome.

FFXI, not FFXII. FFXII was the one with the main character who looked like he drew his abs on with eyeliner.

As for playing PC MMOs on a TV...it doesn't require that much to hook up your computer to a TV last I checked. I know one guy who plays his PC on a home cinema system with a projector and everything.

Because he can.

It's not difficult to do that but it's too much hassle, well for me anyway, I can't get an internet reception downstairs. Although I'm a bit worried about using a console controller for a MMO. Maybe if the consoles had keyboards with worked with games or MMOs with action controls. APB and ToR I guess.

Doesn't the PS3 have M+K functionality, it's just that no one seems to code for it? I vaguely recall reading that...somewhere. I guess if the developers bothered to code for both or just M+K then it'd work fine on consoles. MMORPGs tend to have a number of skills and abilities which might not transfer well to a gamepad.

However, if you look at Planetside [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planetside], Sony's MMOFPS game, it wouldn't be any worse or any better depending on your choice between M+K or gamepad (arguments for mouses being superior to analogy sticks for FPS games aside, of course). If Sony were to port - or release a 'reboot' - of Planetside for the PS3, I have a feeling it might work well. I only played a few days of the free trial on my PC, but it seemed like a solid game and was one of the few MMOFPS both in existence (I can't name any others off hand).

/sidetracked myself.

Point is, while MMORPGs might not transfer well to a gamepad unless you implimented a skill limiting system similar to what Guild Wars has (I think. Not played it for more than 5 minutes at a friend's house), but MMOFPS games are a whole other kettle of fish. It's a pretty niche market at the moment and if Sony capitalises on them then...well, we'll have to see. It could be a nice feather in the PS3's cap.

...I still don't understand. You don't need an internet connection to connect your PC to the HDTV [http://www.ehow.com/video_4978231_use-tv-as-computer-monitor.html].

Getting an internet connection to play MMO's...well considering how much lighter and flat new TV's are, you could always move it upstairs to your computer as well. (unless your parents stop you :p)

You see when I'm on the internet I use mobile broadband (the USB modem one) which doesn't give me reception downstairs, Moving the HDTV upstairs is out of the question as it takes 3 people to lift the 47" and there's no real point moving the PC downstairs for a session, if MMOs worked on the PS3 well, I'm just saying it would be more convenient for me to play it on a console.

So what MMOs are coming out on the PS3?

We got DC Online, The Agency, Everquest II, FreeRealms and FF14 (although the rumour is, thats just 4 player co-op, not MMO).

I wouldnt say that MMOs will be a strong selling point though, as the majority of MMO players already have their own MMOs on PC. Its still nice that Ill be able to play an MMO without getting myself a PC though :)
