Red 5 Unveils MMOG Shooter, Firefall

[vimeo= 14628833 ]

After five years of (very) quiet work, Red 5 Studios has finally revealed its first game.

It's been a while since we've heard from Red 5 Studios. Between the <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/op-ed/836-Pushing-the-Envelope-Red-5-Recruiting>crazy recruiting drive they had a few years ago and then the recent news that the studio <a href=http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/26960/Source_Red_5_Studios_Lays_Off_Workers.php>had to lay off a significant portion of its workforce, it honestly seemed like the studio was possibly going to disappear before it ever released a game. It turns out this was the wrong thing to assume, because the developer has formally announced Firefall, an online "team-based action shooter" that actually looks pretty cool.

Red 5 officially unveiled the game at the Penny Arcade Expo, but everything that was on display there is now online. This includes the cinematic trailer (seen here) and a <a href=http://vimeo.com/14580971>ten minute video of gameplay footage. The footage shows how you can switch between third and first-person perspectives, mine resources, fly vehicles around what looks like an immense world, and get into some pretty crazy firefights.

Based on the actual in-game footage, Firefall looks like a cross between Tribes, <a href=http://www.amazon.com/Borderlands-Xbox-360/dp/B000WMEEB2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1283966676&sr=8-1>Borderlands, and <a href=http://www.amazon.com/Starship-Troopers-Casper-Van-Dien/dp/B000OVLBHG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1283966645&sr=8-1>Starship Troopers. That isn't meant as an insult, either; the game legitimately looks like it has taken the best parts from each franchise (the jetpacks, the art style, and the insect-like enemies) and created something that looks really fun and fresh.

The game's <a href=http://www.firefallthegame.com>official website also has a section where you can <a href=http://www.firefallthegame.com/forums/register.php>sign up to be a part of the game's beta testing.

Is it just me that thinks that the russian guy is a bit sterotypical?
Look pretty rad though.

You mean like Sidorovich from S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Marcus from Borderlands, yet seems to look a lot like Sarge from Quake III Arena? Because that is what I thought...

This looks interesting o.o

Admittedly, a few stylistic decisions I mightn't enjoy, but, even so I think given half a chance I'd play it. 'Only thing might put me off is if there were a really, really limited character customisation provision.

I mean like in I was expecting him to talk about to motherland and saying "I must break you...." to the insects.

It reminds me a bit of Tribes. I mean, sure, they both have jetpacks, but I feel like there's more to it than that. The over-the-shoulder bit, there are apparently classes... I'll say this, if it's anything like tribes, I'll enjoy it!

Or the inexplicably scantily clad female? You'd think they'd give her more body armor (not to mention enough ammo) in such a dangerous situation.

Eeehh. This looks like Borderlands, only in massive multiplayer there's no way the quests can be as well designed.

It is F2P and they have currently said that there will be no items that give you a skill advantage in the cash shop.

If anyone does sign up to the forums add Issa as a friend, maybe we can get an Escapist Social Group started once they implement them.

You just gotta love how incredible unprepared those folks are. They know exactly what's coming and yet manage to fall within a minute, of course running out of ammo after 20seconds -.-

I saw the demo of this at PAX and talked to some of the devs. Great guys and very passionate about their game, and also very conscious about how careful they'll need to be with the microtransactions to keep them from unbalancing anything. I'll definitely be giving this a good look when it comes out.

Not nearly as stereotypical as the black dude dying first.

Anyway, i'm VERY intrested. A multiplayer shooter full of bright colors, eye-humpingly gorgeous scenery, AND with jetpacks that look like iPods? Count me in! Looks exactly like the kind of game i prefer.

I think this looks really promising and with 5 years in development hopefully they will have come out with something special
