The Week in Review - PCs, Xbox Live and Plagiarism

On this week's edition, Valve talks down Xbox Live and Jack Thompson raises a stink over Medal of Honor.

Zynga Accused of Copying Other Games

It seems that Gearbox isn't just making Duke Nukem Forever, it now owns the franchise. According to its former owner 3D Realms, Gearbox was the only appropriate home for Duke, because it was the only place with enough passion and love for the character. It not clear at the moment whether Duke will be anything but a poison chalice, but Gearbox at least has the advantage of being able to finish a game. More people hate Zynga

Valve makes another contradiction

People are protesting 'touchy subjects'

The cost of the ultimate PC/Xbox is 8k

That Duke Nukem thing is real

What a shit week. I think my head exploded from all the hate and fanboy rage.

What a week its been..

But i have also ready earlier that Zynga boss deliberatly scammed people for money then to admit it without any remorse.. Through their options to pay for benefits in their games..
He seems like a proper good fellaw dont he?

Valve is as always awesome, Microsoft is not.. No news there..

Jack Thompson should crawl back under the rock in wich he came out from..

The Duke better shine like a golden star made of win!

Did they really need someone to admit that was Zinga's strategy? It's been pretty clear from the beginning as almost all their games have brought up accusations of plagiarism. They're getting sued already, but they've been making money, so maybe that's the new business model people are trying out. Just substitute development costs of making your own games with the amount you have to pay off other companies for ripping off theirs.

Xbox Live's policies are crap and that's why I will never get it.

I very much doubt anyone would ever turn to Medal of Honor for military training, and if someone did they would most likely be very unprepared for combat. Paranoid people who think half the world are terrorists who are out to get them really annoy me.

I'm sure it would be cheaper to buy an Xbox as well as a gaming quality PC you build yourself.

I don't believe I will ever play another Duke Nukem game in my life, whether or not one is ever made. I will check the reviews of Duke Nukem Forever if/when it ever comes out to find out if it turns out terrible anyway despite the long delay though.

hell, you can build the $17k version for less that the cost of the $8k verison. you can even find the EXACT same case online for about $150. then just rip open a 360 and shove it in there and bingo, that computer for around $4000-5000. that is of course if you have the money and the insanity to want that much computational power.

Valve is full of crap (here), other companies have updated their games for free, some of which have been massive. 12 man Uber is promising frequent updates, have already stealth patched their game once, and will be offering their first DLC for free.

I know it's unpopular because Valve is ZOMG SO AWESOME, but it's very likely the reason they don't update TF2 for the 360 is more because they have no financial incentive to do so, while it's one of the major promotional points for Steam.

I know it's not the answer fanboys are looking for because it doesn't coincide with what they want to believe, but reality rarely stops to consult us for what we want.

As best I can tell, Valve was just being arrogant and assumed that Microsoft would modify their system to fit Valve's development paradigm.

Honestly, with Valve's talk of wanting to put steam on consoles, I couldn't be happier that Microsoft isn't bowing to them.

You're quite likely right. I think it's mostly a financial thing, that they will serve the community only when it serves them. But tell that to the herd, and you'll most likely get flamed.

I'm not sure what to think about Steam on consoles, honestly, but I dislike digital monopolies as much as the real world ones.

Honestly, that's all I expect out of any publicly traded company.

Valve has been selling Steam for long enough now that they're very much stuck in the "selling our platform" mindset. They want to push updates they way they do on Steam, which works well on Steam because they own the platform and are trying to promote it.

The problem is that Steam and Xbox Live are very different platforms. Xbox Live is designed to be a much more "out of the box" system. They don't want users having to update every time they boot up the game, and as such have a certification process that assumes less frequent updates and a clear seperation between bug fixes and content distrubution.
