Nintendo Warns Consumers Against Cartridge "FuFu"

Nintendo wants gamers to celebate the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., just as long as they don't blow into their cartridges.

With Nintendo celebrating [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/103418-Nintendo-Celebrates-25th-Anniversary-of-Super-Mario-Bros] the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. this month (in Japan), it's assuming that many a gamer will be breaking out their Famicom/NES cartridges in tribute to the plumber's first "super" appearance. The company even released a bunch of videos to celebrate Mario's history, but inadvertently may have promoted something it shouldn't have.

Namely, Nintendo shows a guy [http://www.nintendo.co.jp/mario25th/movie/index3.html] performing "fufu" - as Tiny Cartridge says the act is called in certain circles - on a Super Mario Bros. Famicom cart. In other words, he's blowing into it to get it to work, an act I feel bad that the younger of us may never experience, what with their holo-discs and their "Steam" download machine.

Whether "fufu" is an old wives tale or a genuine way to get a wonky cartridge to start up, nobody can say for sure, but it always seemed to work for me. Either way, Nintendo does not condone "fufu," even though it acknowledged its widespread use in the commercial.

In a new commercial [http://www.nintendo.co.jp/mario25th/movie/index4.html] created to fix Nintendo's faux-pas, Nintendo sort of hilariously imposes a bunch of text over its own "fufu" performer. The text warns those that would seek to blow into their cartridges by saying it may remove dust, but could also end up leading to rusty connectors, and even death (of a cartridge).

If you've ever caught committing and act of "fufu" by Nintendo, expect a strong scolding. And then just keep on doing it anyway.

Pff. I'll keep doing it; what else can you do to get rid of the dust? Besides, my cartridges always said they liked Fufu, so no one is getting hurt.

So it is referred to as performing fufu? Umm... wow...

I'll just stick to saying "blowing into the cartridge".

A good way to get dust out without the traditional, ceremonial, and time-honoured act of blowing into the end ('Fufu', apparently) is using a dry Q-Tip/cottonbud/earbud/Cotton swab [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cotton_swab]. (Thanks to Wikipedia for the correct name for those things. o_O)

I just blow the dust out, I've done it all my life and it has worked all my life. My old Genesis carts are still perfectly fine despite 15 years worth of "fufu."
As long as no spit comes out, you are fine.

I've never even heard the term before, but I've done it a thousand times. I normally just say "blow into cartridge".

Like an above comment said, I find myself blowing on discs instinctively at times. It's part of gaming culture.

Fufu is the only reason I continued to play Pokemon. But... I didn't know it was called "Fufu". I just called it blowing into the cartridge :D
