Question of the Day, September 30, 2010

A controversial World Wildlife Fund campaign has Moscow shopgoers being "shot" [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/103872-WWF-Shoots-Russian-Clothes-Shoppers] as they try on clothing in boutiques. As the customer checks out his or her new duds in the dressing room, two gaping wounds appear in the mirror. The campaign is meant to show customers the sad reality of poaching, but some believe it's been taken too far. What do you think of the campaign?

I suppose you can tell some one the stove is hot or you can just hold their hand on it.

It sounds like it gets the point across, but it is kinda (read: stupidly) creepy.

I'd be annoyed if I got "shot" while shopping to say the least.

How is that taking it too far? There's really nothing wrong with it and certainly nothing worse than what Peta has done.

ITs like any other campaign designed to get into peoples faces - Its goes to extremes. TO be honest I dont see how it really related to poching, at all.

But, you know what crazy people are like

it's a bit tough to decide for me. I'm against poaching since it's only meant for money, and that its reckless and out of control. killing animals should be for food, and maybe for your own personal trophy. But killing off endangered animals, and using their furs to make thousands of dollars is just wrong to me.

<color=purple> I think that they made exactly the impression they intended to make and they have the right to do so.

A few points:

1.) What "trendy shops" sell white t-shirts with giant tiger heads on them?
2.) I hope the stores like losing sales from shocked customers.
3.) What does this even show? That people who don't hunt animals and who aren't even trying on animal products will start bleeding from their chests if they think about tigers?

There wasn't a "WTF does this prove" poll option though (or even a "doesn't get the point across" option). :/

This
The WWF is going against something much more specific, and it makes sense. It's not like they are trying to stop all hunting, they just want to keep the endangered species safe so that in the future those animals can be hunted occasionally and without worry of extinction.

I think it was awesome, but I feel sorry for anyone who actually got really scared when they tried on the shirts.

Have they been hitting people with steel chairs, or talking trash on their in-ring skills? Oh wait, wrong WWF...

OT: It goes a little to far. That being said, it's an impressive display, if a little disturbing. But then again, nuts like this always go a litle to far... I agree with their cause, but not with their methods, just like PETA.

Pretty sure they aren't protecting endangered species so they can be hunted in the future XD

This is kind of what I was thinking. Does it say anywhere why you're getting shot? Is it a total surprise and then afterwards you're supposed to, I dunno, ask someone what happened? Now, I don't think it goes too far, but I think that the only way this will actually say ANYTHING is if the someone in the store is going to explain it to them. Now, I don't know if any of you have worked retail, but if it was me in that store, I'm not going to read any prepared statements. Unless there's some pamphlets or a sign or SOMETHING nearby, that just isn't going to mean anything.

Plus, it's kind of an ugly shirt.

It's good to see that the money people donate to the charity is going towards conservation efforts and not being floundered on marketing gimmicks... In a few years will they do a similar thing about the Giant Panda?

"The giant panda is going extinct. To show people how bad they are we set up a pretend marketing campaign to show marketing campaigners how they are evil. When they tried to waste money on a crappy campaign whilst looking in our expensive mirror it appeared that they had poo flung at them. This did nothing to help the giant pandas, but at least we made it into the news! Take that marketing companies."

Not gonna lie, I initially thought this was going to be about professional wrestling (WWF/E).

OT: This certainly sounds like a unique and creative way to ruin stores sales, that's for sure.

I think that's about the coolest thing I've seen all week. I WISH they did that here, I'd be calling all my friends out to come see the wicked just-got-shot-in-the-chest store.

Of course, I'd be more excited about the blood and gore than the point they're actually trying to make. In fact, I just forgot what the message was...something about shotting consumers...?

It's not like they were actually shooting at people.
I've worked in marketing and this is far from the most disturbing viral marketing I've ever seen.

Anyone remember the all I want for xmas is a psp campaign? There's one that's worse and way more insulting:
