You're Too Chicken to Beat Resident Evil 3DS

Capcom is set on returning the Resident Evil series to its horror roots in Resident Evil: Revelations for the 3DS - only players might be too scared to ever beat the game.

At Nintendo's recent 3DS conference - you know, the one where we learned about the potentially-controversial price [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/103890-Nintendos-Iwata-Blames-You-for-the-Price-of-the-3DS] - Capcom talked up its duo of Resident Evil titles for the new 3D-capable handheld. While Resident Evil: Mercenaries 3D is aimed at fans who prefer the more "action-y" style of Resident Evil 5, Capcom's RE team is well aware that some fans miss the horror stylings of the earlier games in the series.

"Resident Evil: Revelations is a pure horror game," said a Capcom representative in a video comparing Revelations to Mercenaries 3D. "The fight against terror that is approaching you is a theme this time. Being able to experience it in 3D must be a great joy for the players." In other words, it feels scarier when the demon dogs are jumping through windows right at you.

Not only is Revelations a "pure horror game," but Capcom is already wondering if it's too scary for gamers: "Right now all the members in the development team are making it so that in the end, it may even make players too scared to continue forward."

If Capcom can actually deliver on this and make a horror game that scares gamers into being unable to finish, I will be very impressed - but for the moment I'm skeptical.

It is nice to see that the developer recognizes that it has two very distinct Resident Evil fanbases: one group that prefers a more action-packed title and one group that wants to be scared out of its wits.

I very much doubt this.

Would be kinda cool to see Yahtzee reviewing it though.

Resident Evil? Scary?

BWA HA HA!

I'll believe it when I see it.

Startle scares like dogs through windows don't count.

Back to it's roots eh? So does that mean we'll be using the directional pad to turn our characters in the direction we want to go before moving forward. That would definitely make for a marked increase in tension.

The only time I was scared of Resident Evil was when I played the third one at age 6.

I too am very sceptical, it sounds like something you say to start hype more than anything. Such as "I'm worried this game will be too good, some people won't be able to stop long enough to eat."

I like the whole duel-focus idea though. Resident Evil has never scared me, probably never will, but at least they're acknowledging that some people are missing horror games. This isn't the series for me, but it's a nice thing to see nonetheless.

The Darkness is the only game that's ever scared me. It's so. Fucking. DRAINING.

It sounds like they're saying this will shock you, not scare you.

I got into the series with number 4 and I loved it. I don't know what it was like before then but by the sounds of it the horror came from a terrible camera and bad controls. If they can make a scary game in the style of RE4 (and really, RE4 did have some scary moments as it is) I'll be all over that. If it's more like RE5... Not so much.

I'll believe it when I see it. Especially Resident Evil(not to say the games as they stand are bad though!).

Now if Team Silent reassembled and took advantage of 3D technology then... hmmm...

I don't think Resident Evil was actually scary during any point of its history - a paragon of staggeringly awful writing that becomes hilarious because it's so staggeringly stupid certainly, but scary? Yeah, not so much. Hearing something like this from Capcom is just inherently ridiculous, given their track record.

I have never really been scared by Resident evil games. RE 2 is my favourite, but its still not scary.

Why do I think they're gonna try something first person again and try and make use of the 3D in silly ways...

Oh well, i'm a big fan of the old school resi's, so i'll wait and see.

Don't know about being too chicken to beat it though!

eh. very poor marketing tactic, using a pissing contest to drive sales is very sad and desperate.

I bet there are some dimwits out-there who will willingly buying this bullshit to purely "prove them wrong"

..........I got scared of the Regeneradors from 4.

Their breathing, and the twitchiness, and the not-dying...oh god...

Although that was a couple of years ago. Will be interesting to see if this actually lives up to being scary.
