Activision Confirms New NASCAR Title

Activision and Eutechnyx are bringing the thunder with an all-new NASCAR racing game scheduled to come out next year.

Sprint Cup Series Championship [http://www.nascarthegame.com/] on 22 official tracks. Computer-controlled drivers are programmed to emulate their flesh-and-blood counterparts, while gamers after a more unpredictable challenge can take part in online races with up to 16 players. In both modes, drivers can earn experience points that will unlock decal packs, special car designs and, in career mode, sponsorships and special races. There's even an "interactive celebration mode" for victories, although no indication was given as to what that might actually mean.

"It was crucial to take a fresh look at what makes the sport so popular," said Ed Martin of Eutechnyx [http://www.eutechnyx.com/], which is developing the game. In an unusual twist, NASCAR signed its new licensing deal directly with the studio rather than the publisher; Activision is only distributing the game. "We're working very closely with NASCAR, the drivers, the teams, the tracks and the sponsors to get all the minute details right, and give this game the polish and push the fans deserve."

Hopefully the "fresh look" will give Eutechnyx some fresh ideas about how to make a NASCAR game with something approaching broad-based appeal. The difficulty that's plagued all such games in the past is that driving a stock car around an oval track can get awfully dull, awfully quickly. I appreciate the fine art of drafting and the nuances of pit strategy as much as the next guy, but a realistic racing experience doesn't necessarily translate well into videogame format. But Martin said that creating a pure arcade game isn't the answer either.

"There have been times where there were 'over-the-top' games like ESPN [http://www.amazon.com/NASCAR-Rumble-Playstation/dp/B000038ABG/ref=sr_1_1?s=gateway&ie=UTF8&qid=1285874856&sr=8-1]. "At the same time, you can't get too sim-y. We want you to jump right in and have fun. If you turn off all the assists in our NASCAR game, this is a very real - as close as you can come to a simulation on a console - but at the same time, with the assists turned on, this is a very fun, approachable game for the common NASCAR fan. "

The first official trailer for the new NASCAR racing game will debut on Speed [http://www.speedtv.com/] at 10 am EDT on October 3. NASCAR The Game 2011 is scheduled for release in February 2011 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii.

While in bumper-to-bumper traffic while going 200 miles an hour.

It may be boring and long-winded as hell, but NASCAR Sprint Cup racing requires lightning reflexes and nerves of steel. Not to mention an encyclopedic knowledge on cars, as something as trivial as an extra half-pound of air pressure in the right-front tire can cost you a win.

Yeah I see how that can be exciting for the driver in a real life scenario but to the player in a game all you do is drive and turn left... and yes I have played Nascar games before no for not longer than an hour at a time...

Don't knock the challenge until you've tried to do it in a trailer that's being repossessed, holding a beer, yelling at a barking dog and rocking a baby while relatives mudwrestle over leftovers in the yard.

Yeah. I usually keep race lengths down to about 15-20%. I start dozing off after that. But it gets pretty intense on tracks like Daytona and Talledega where you have all of 2 inches on all sides.

I hear crickets chirping.

EA gave it up because no one was buying their half-assed attempt at making a game about a boring sport. NASCAR simulations are tedious and boring, I mean, honestly, who wants to turn 500 laps at Bristol in one sitting? Some people actually do, and Papyrus' effort from 7 or 8 years ago still sets the standard to NASCAR sims. NASCAR arcade racers are probably the worst arcade racers out there. And EA's attempts at the middle ground between sim and arcade was admirable but ultimately failed.

I'm not going to argue that NASCAR is easy. If it was easy, everyone would do it. I'm just going to say that as a spectator and someone who plays video games, NASCAR bores me to the point that I can feel IQ points leaking out of my ear when I try to watch or play anything NASCAR.

Good luck to Activision (did I really just say that?) and their efforts. With cheesenuts at the helm of Activision, it'd better turn a big profit real quick or face the chopping block.

Did you read the article? activision is just selling the copies not making them.

Also i'm excited i love nascar and 2007 and 08 were just bad and overly complicated.

As a NASCAR fan, the only NASCAR game I ever played was NASCAR Thunder 2004, which was excellent for its time. Things like car tuning were accessible yet deep, and there were lots of short challenges to test your skills--things like dodging wrecks without taking damage, or passing X cars in a couple of laps. Yeah, driving lots of laps could be boring, which is why I loved to spin out and then charge back to the front. What Activision should do is really work on making it fun to drive a really good, dominant car, so that you're not bored of driving in circles.

Trust me, America is very divided on the matter. Woohoo! LEFT TURNS AHOY!

I'll take Rally over the Big Left Turn Race.

The difference between F1 and NASCAR illustrate perfectly the difference between the USA and Europe.

The core audience of NASCAR is drunken rednecks and the core audience of F1 are a bit more classy.

How do they get 22 different tracks? Please tell me these aren't all just iterations of an oval.

Also, it would be entertaining to get a few top ranked NASCAR drivers to set a time on the Nurburgring then get schooled by Sabine Schmitz. We could make it a reality show. Call it something like "So you think you can drive?" :p

yeah...... see, the problem with this is the replayability.

How many times can you lap before you get bored? isnt the average race like 200 laps?
I can see that getting old really quick.
