Fable III Inspired by PS3 Exclusives Heavy Rain and Uncharted

The Fable III developers at Lionhead sure played a lot of PS3 exclusives despite being owned by Microsoft.

Josh Atkins, senior design director at Lionhead Studios, said that the games that most influenced the design of Fable III were Naughty Dog's Uncharted 2 and Heavy Rain by Quantic Dream. Which makes sense, those were both very groundbreaking games that will influence the medium for years to come, but the interesting part is that they were both exclusive to Microsoft's chief competitor, the Sony PlayStation 3. In case you didn't make the connection, Lionhead Studios is completely owned by Microsoft and Fable III will be released exclusively on the Xbox 360 and Windows platforms. Of course, Atkins also said he was influenced by the addictiveness of Peggle so it is clear that the design influences for Fable III are definitely eclectic. Fable III is due out October 26.

"We were all very involved with and all played Heavy Rain," Atkins said. "We all have a lot of respect for David Cage and the guys at Quantic Dream. It's a very unique experience and a very compelling story - and there's a lot of deep gameplay there. The weaving of decision and story in Heavy Rain is another one. You saw the beginnings of that with Fahrenheit, and they've taken it much further."

Does that mean that we'll see extended quicktime events in Fable III? Atkins dismisses that concern immediately. "I think you'll see ... there's influence [from Heavy Rain] without question in how our interaction systems work and in how all [the player's] decisions work. There was many things we liked about that game, but one of the key things that they did was that the decisions you made rooted into the game world. Your eyes are always fixated on the game world - you're not looking down at the interface."

As for Uncharted, Atkins was impressed with its cinematic storytelling. "Another one we talk a lot about is Uncharted 2. That blend of cinema and great gameplay was something we were certainly very influenced by," Atkins said. "With Uncharted, it really comes down to the blend of gameplay, cinema and acting - particularly the superb voice acting in that game."

The addictiveness of PopCap's Peggle is a major influence in all game design. "I know it sounds funny, but it's our job to look at the simple addiction of a game like that," he said. "It's a game we spend a lot of time playing ourselves."

I'm glad that Atkins is platform agnostic and recognizes good game design no matter what console it is played on.

Isn't that like drinking Coke at the Pepsi factory?

But in all seriousness... good! Drawing inspiration is a great thing, so long as you aren't making a direct copy.

Hmm that is interesting.

Peggle is addictive? Probably as addictive as tetris. Fortunatly for me, I don't get addicted to those types of games. 5 minutes is enough for me!

I'm pretty sure that a couple of months ago they name-dropped a bunch of other games too.

Hmm... I wonder why they'd be throwing out names of hugely successful titles that they'd been "inspired" by...

A sequel to a series of highly ambitious but ultimately mediocre fantasy RPGs drawing heavy influence from a great game brought down by its characters and story as well as a terrible game barely held afloat by the same? That's almost retarded enough to be interesting.

yeah don't care. If Fable 3 doesn't deal with the crap that was the end of and endings of fable 3 then Peter Molyneux can go suck it.

I don't care where they got their ideas, when the fuck is the PC version coming out if ever! I'm not blaming the site for not telling me of course, I'm blaming Microsoft and Lionhead for just delaying it and then saying nothing else.

Huh, sounds interesting. Hopefully Fable 3's main story will be tolerable now.

I hope Fable 3 won't be utter crap like Fable 2 was/is.
Funny, the exact same thing was said when Fable 2 came out, with people hoping it wouldn't be utter crap like the first. Now for some reason it seems a great deal of people love the first. Confusing really, makes me wonder if the same thing will happen with this time.

This isn't directed at you personally, just to everyone at large.

I hear how much they liked Heavy Rain and it makes me nervous...I'm just going to ignore it though and hope for the best.

Hmmm, this seems like trying to generate hype by referancing as many games they think are popular as they can as inspirations.

I say this, because it seems to me that most gamers that played "Heavy Rain" gave it some credit for being pretty, but also were quite frank in saying that it wasn't a game. The only people who semed to think it was one were ultra-casuals. Even among professional reviewers the response seemed to be pretty mixed, where it was getting good marks on technical merits, and there was some potential there, but bad marks in of the fact that a simulator for brushing your teeth wasn't exactly exciting game play.

Peggle is a well know simple game that keeps people playing, and uncharted is a third person shooter with some really nice visuals.

The most disturbing thing here is that in firing that shotgun I notice that not one of those games is an RPG, like this game is supposed to be.

Right now I'm going to push this to the back of my mind, because I liked the previous two games, but these referances seem like they were premeditated to convince me that they were developing the worst RPG in history.

I suspect that if they could have found a way they probaly would have also mentioned "Twilight" as an inspiration that affected game development due to it's popularity and how it would get that group of casuals involved.

I agree but i doubt it will be a direct copy considering the game settings
