New Halo Wars Details Emerge

The July issue of GamePro has a few new details to offer about Halo Wars' gameplay style and new vehicles.

With only one resource, "supplies", to be gathered in the real-time strategy installment of the Halo franchise, gameplay will be kept fast and action-oriented. Bungie promises that players will be in combat "within ten seconds" of starting a game.

The locales are varied between human and alien worlds. Halo rings will not be featured in the story, but are likely to host multiplayer matches.

Online play will support up to six players, while two players can work cooperatively through the campaign.

A number of units for both the UNSC (humans) and Covenant sides were confirmed:

Ehh, we shall see. It might be decent since it's an RTS designed from the ground up for consoles, rather than an RTS designed for PC and later ported to consoles.

Unfortunately, since it is designed for consoles, I highly doubt that it will have a decent amount of depth or strategy to the gameplay.

I'm definitely interested, as I'm a die-hard Halo fan who enjoys the odd RTS and I think that Ensemble's got the right team to do for console RTSs what Rare did for console FPSs with Goldeneye. That being said, I'm likely to try a demo first just to make sure their control scheme works for me.

a real time strategy game where you begin combat "within ten seconds"... this will be a disaster, mark my words.

Meh all seems a bit simple really considering other RTS's. How they adapt it for a console may be interesting but it all sounds a bit like fan service.

I think this'll be a fun game. As long as the controls are friendly...

Since Ensemble is the one responsible for the great RTS which is Age of Empires, I don't think they will mess this up.

Reminds me a little bit like KuF with Halo. It could be ok but I would much rather own Endwar than this.

To all the naysayers:

1) Ensemble is looking to specifically create an RTS that works well on consoles. Part of this is controls, but I imagine that they'll be adjusting gameplay design as well.

2) Getting into combat within ten seconds a disaster? The game can't be as complex as RTS titles on the PC? It depends on how you look at it. Considering that this is based on a franchise whose original subheading was "Combat Evolved", I find that an RTS focusing more on combat would be appropriate for the franchise. Does this mean the game will be "dumbed down" since it won't largely be based on resource gathering and management? Not really. Look at the Resident Evil games. Resident Evil 4 reduced the number of puzzles and had more linear gameplay, which is technically a downgrade, but the combat was so fine-tuned that it introduced a balance. If Halo Wars creates a game with less resource management but more and finer combat options, then technically you have yourself a balance.

3) Y'know, what's the point? Not only is it Halo, but it's an RTS on consoles. People will forgo rational thinking and open-mindedness because it's much easier and pretentious to hate it. I should just give up.
