Sony's "PlayStation Rewards" Brings Loyalty Program to PS3s

Coming this Spring, Sony will start rewarding gamers for their activity on PlayStation consoles. Believe it or not, "reward" is code for "fabulous prizes."

If you're a loyal PlayStation gamer, then we have some good news for you! Sony has announced a new loyalty program for its customers, "PlayStation Rewards." The program will provide players with various awards and bragging rights based on the activities they engage in whilst using their PlayStation consoles. Currently, PlayStation Rewards is being developed for PS3 consoles, but PSP owners will eventually be able to participate, too.

According to Susan Panico, Senior Director of the PlayStation Network, an online system is the best way to reward customer loyalty, since roughly 80 percent of PS3s are connected to the net. As a result, Panico explained that there's an entire online ecosystem to study.

"I call [the ecosystem] hearts and dollars," Panico said during a recent phone interview. "It's not about just what [customers] spend, but what do they give back to us. And in a very simple way, we give them rewards to thank them for their participation."

The program will even have a semi-RPG element to it. There will be three tiers of ranks for PS3 owners to gradually level up to. Users will start on "Select", move up to "Pro", and eventually hit "Legendary." There will be a progress meter for users to keep tabs on how their advancement is progressing.

Advancing through the tiers will be based on players' activities. From the sound of it, just about everything will net some amount of experience points. Playing new games for the first time, buying content from the PSN, and taking surveys are just a few of the examples Sony mentioned.

The program is sort of a spiritual successor to <a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_Underground>PlayStation Underground, Sony's very own digital game magazine. According to Panico, however, PlayStation Rewards will incorporate feedback from consumers much more effectively than its predecessor did.

"Historically, our loyalty has been around self-reported data and a one-way relationship," Panico explained. "Joe Consumer would say, 'I have twenty games in these genres,' and we would send him information around his interests and occasionally engage him in a marketing survey. It was great for the time, but now that we have a connected device we really wanted to look at how we could create a two-way communication relationship with our consumers."

Of course, loyalty programs tend to come with, well, rewards, and Sony doesn't plan to slack in this department. PSN users will receive virtual goods like items for avatars and Home spaces. There are also plans for real world rewards, with potential prizes including going to the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas on Sony's dime.

The service isn't due to launch until (tentatively) next April, but PlayStation Plus members are being invited to participate in the beta program in the very near future.

Sounds awesome, might need to sign up for PS+ to get into the beta, and of course the other stuff. :)

This also looks like an offshoot of Sony's general program, Sony Rewards (www.sonyrewards.com). It'd be cool if the two of them could be connected somehow.

you know, a while ago I was thinking about what would happen if Sony rewarded getting psn trophies with credit to buy stuff at the ps store. something like:
Bronze - 5 cents
Silver - 10 cents
Gold - 15 cents
Platinum - 20 cents
I heard somehere microsoft did something like this but I'm not sure. At least this would reward skill and/or commitment to games.

Fuck yes. Microsoft, why you be lagging behind in progressing with your XBOX Live infrastructure. I want this too!
Microsoft isn't lagging behind, Sony is. Where is my avoid douchebag player option? Where is my cross game chat? Why doesn't pressing the PS button when a notification pops up take me to the message or trophy screen like it does on the 360? And why the FUCK doesn't the Playstation Store update at the same time every Tuesday like both the XBLA and even Nintendo's Wii Shop Channel do on their update days?!

This rewards program stinks of wank to me. Rather than actually bringing out basic features that PSN should have had from the start, they keep giving us bullcrap like Playstation Plus, color swatches for our friend list, and a video editor that makes Windows Live Movie Maker look powerful.

Hey Sony. If you really want to reward your customers, knock off the damn gimmicks already and actually get your online network up to snuff with the competition. Just because PSN is free doesn't mean it has to suck ass.

That would be great, then I could stop complaining about trophies being completely worthless.
If they really want to give us rewards, why don't they just give us firmware that will let the ps3 do all of the crazy things it can do but doesn't because they sandbag the hell out of it.

there are douchebags on PSN!?! what madness is this!
crossgame chat will be released soon.
because the menu is pretty easy to navigate.
ive found PSN is less laggy than XBL. so i prefer it. i dont need all those extra features anyway.
PS+ isnt bullcrap. its a premium service that allows early access to features and cool extras. at least it isnt required to play games.

in other news... words cannot describe how happy this announcement makes me... im going to get soo much free stuff!

I'm going to keep a close eye on this, as well as PS+ as a whole. Not because I'm excited or anything of the like. But because I'm wondering how playstation users are going to get screwed.

As it is, those very same PS fanboys that mocked the xbox users for paying for an online service are treating PS+ like the second coming of Christ and that alone is cause for concern for me.Right now you can still keep your current PSN services for free, but for how long? It will start out innocently enough, with little things that users wont really care about being switched over to plus like exclusive things for Home and such. Before you know it, crossgame voice chat is PS+ exclusive, and I can already see a big exclusive game like Killzone 3 coming out with only 2 maps for regular users while the rest are available to PS+ users.

Which brings me to the topic at hand, right now the beta is offered to PS+ users only. If the numbers are good enough, I would not put it past Sony to offer it to these users exclusively.

Hope it includes retroactive points for PS Store purchases, since I spent like 400? there already :(

Same wishes here. The rewards system sounds like it could be really cool. Might convince me to get on PSN more often. If this is based on some kind of customer loyalty, good thing Sony can't tell if there are Microsoft/Nintendo consoles in your household.

OR CAN THEY?

Yeah, I had the same thought.

I do hope those points will be retroactive with all the games I've played on my lovely PS3 over the years, it would suck if it didn't :(

But regardless, this does look like a pretty neat system, I am totaly going to check it out.

Wow. Hats off to Sony here, this... was not something I saw coming, and it's a damn smart idea.
