Jill Valentine Returns in Resident Evil 3DS Gameplay Footage

The first gameplay footage of Resident Evil: Revelations features the master of unlocking herself.

Resident Evil: Revelations is Resident Evil 5 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101571-Resident-Evil-3DS-Runs-On-RE5-Marvel-3-Engine], which has fueled rumors that it'll look pretty good in addition to being in 3D. Thanks to Japanese television show MXTV, we now have our first glance at Revelations in action.

Indeed, it looks pretty good. MXTV was evidently taping at the Japanese Nintendo Conference that took place last month where Nintendo announced [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/103851-Nintendo-3DS-Coming-in-2011-With-300-Price-Tag] the 3DS release date. For some reason, this footage hasn't been taken down.

When the camera pans in close to Revelations, it's hard to tell how the graphics appear due to the 3D blurring effect, but it looks at least as good as a PlayStation 2 game to me. Jill Valentine is shown roaming around a few hallways and getting frightened by what look like giant rats or raccoons popping out of a vent. I'm sure that's much scarier in 3D.

Later, Jill encounters big, tentacle-faced zombies that are freakier than the basic variety seen in other Resident Evil games. The trailer [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101571-Resident-Evil-3DS-Runs-On-RE5-Marvel-3-Engine] for Revelations shows Jill and other franchise star Chris Redfield engaged in some kind of dispute over a captive man, so both characters will definitely be in the game, but Jill is the only confirmed playable character for now thanks to this video.

MXTV also got footage of 3DS games like Nintendogs + Cats, which basically looks just like Nintendogs [http://www.amazon.com/Nintendogs-Labrador-Retriever-Friends-Nintendo-DS/dp/B0009YDS10/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1288193944&sr=8-1], and the 3DS remake of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. If you'd like to see how the upgraded version of Ocarina of Time looks on the 3DS, the footage is below.

OVT: I can't wait to play the new Resi Evil game and find out who the guy in the chair is

It looks like the majority of games will be using the analog stick rather than the d-pad. Could you imagine having to keep your thumb in the bottom left corner? You wouldn't be able to play for longer than 20 minutes without getting cramp.

Could we please stop quoting Pachter? He has been wrong so many times it's just not even funny anymore. Hopefully if we ignore him he will just go away. Granted, he might be right this time, because Nintendo has been doing really well so far, but his metaphorical batting average is pretty bad.

It almost defies common sense to ignore a second analogue on these things. What bothers me more than this though are the remakes. Literally 100% of the games I've read about or that have been on display for this thing have been games I'd played years ago and have no interest playing again. Seems pretty lazy.

Can we please bring back Jill, Chris, Barry, Leon, and Claire and just throw them all into a single game and omit 5 from the continuity?

My first reaction was "where the fuck have you been."
What's there to complain about? Most people are going to complain that they don't have another analogue stick on the right side. I think if the D-pad was placed extremely awkwardly somebody would've mentioned it by now. From the experiments I've done with my ds, (by which I mean pretending there is a D-pad in the extreme lower left corner) I don't think it's going to be uncomfortable to use it exclusively- you'll just have to make your thumb horizontal and move your hand a little further from the console.

Nintendo doesn't want to conform to the standard dual stick model that every other major developer willingly shackles themselves to. They have a perfectly good (and more accurate) touchscreen at their disposal. Putting another analogue stick on it would be redundant and humiliating.
Also, 3 of the 70+ games that have been announced are remakes, 1 of them has never been on a Nintendo console, and there is not enough info on any of them to confirm that they won't have gameplay enhancements or added content.

I'll be happily buying OOT as a launch title, and will be getting Starfox 64, Metal Gear (never played it), Paper Mario, Mario Kart, and (/crossfingers) Wright vs. Layton. I'd say the lineup looks pretty fucking sweet.

What saddens me is that if it wasn't for the piracy, we'd probably have already played Resident Evil just like in that video but on PSP. Hopefully 3DS and PSP2 can keep those assholes at least somewhat at bay.

That's a very valid point, but not all of us are fans of the touch screen as a substitute. A game like Metroid would have been more accessible to myself and others like me had there been an analogue option included. For me the tiny stylus always felt uncomfortable to use. I'm also not a fan of having my fingers occupy screen space while I play (That Zelda DS game comes immediately to mind) when I'd rather have my controls out of the way instead of covering part of the screen.

The stylus isn't all bad, but in many cases was forced and necessarily bothersome. I'm not suggesting dual analogue as a means of conformity but common sense. Why limit one's options? Why not offer the best of both worlds? Especially for $300.

Wrong thread. :p

Personally, I am much more concerned regarding the positioning of the D-pad itself. It just seems like having the D-pad positioned lower in relation to the A/B/X/Y buttons will make playing games that heavily rely on the D-pad (such as 2D platformers and SRPGs) a real pain. But we won't know for certain until we actually try it.

That kind of sucks you can only see the 3D effect in person, kinda makes advertising for it harder also
While it does make marketing through conventional media very difficult, I don't think it poses a significant problem for Nintendo. They have always had a "playing is believing" approach, shoving the controller into the public's hands, making them try the systems out for themselves and letting word-of-mouth do the rest. It worked with the NES and Wii and it seems to be working this time around. Word-of-mouth is the most effective way of advertising, afterall.

Anyway, the games are looking good so far. It was actually really funny to see that woman react so enthusiastically to Link simply crawling through an opening. It shows that autostereoscopic 3D is in effect and seems to cause a positive reaction in players.

EDIT: Testing to see if my post will appear.

EDIT 2: This double post bug is really getting out of hand. I hope the Escapist administration fixes it.

Are you kidding me, Revelations looks way better than a PS2 game. Maybe it looks like a Gamecube or Xbox (1) game, plus it's got HDR lighting, color correction, AA, AF, and all that. They were aiming to get it looking like RE5, and it's pretty damn close.

OOT, on the other hand, could've looked better. Looks like a PS2 game, def.
