Resident Evil Creator Talks About His Abusive Past

Shinji Mikami survived a horror of his own growing up in an abusive household.

In an interview with Famitsu magazine published this week, Tango Gameworks [http://www.amazon.com/Resident-Evil-5-Gold-Xbox-360/dp/B002Z7BE1U/ref=sr_1_4?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1289490236&sr=1-4]. He revealed that being raised in the Mikami household wasn't exactly an ideal situation.

Mikami was abused by his father, sometimes in a sadistic way. Mikami calls his dad "scary" and said he was hit daily. Though Mikami can somewhat understand why his father might have been upset about his life situation, having dropped out of high school to take care of his family, it doesn't excuse how violent he was.

Mikami describes one particular punishment that really went over the top. When Mikami went to bed one night without going his homework, his dad woke him up, forced him outside without any shoes, and chased him around in a car. By the end of the punishment, Mikami was forced to run six kilometers, and then abandoned to walk home by himself. It's a pretty appalling situation to have to go through.

After surviving his father, Mikami says he ended up applying to Capcom after attending a company recruiting event because he "just wanted to eat at the Hilton for free." He also applied to work at Nintendo, but could only attend one second round of interviews as both companies held them on the same day. He chose Capcom, and is grateful for it, because he's not sure Nintendo would have been the right spot for him.

Today, Mikami hopes to "make games in Japan that can work worldwide" in the "the upper echelons of their field" at Tango Gameworks. He says he won't be bound by standard Japanese practices, and new parent company Zenimax, which also owns Bethesda Softworks, is giving him the freedom to make what he wants. It must have been a huge challenge for Mikami to go from an abusive household, to become a top producer at Capcom, and now the head of his own studio, but I think we're all glad he was able to make it so far.

WHAT THE FUCK KINDA PARENTING IS THAT?!

I'm all for hitting your kids, but that's just cruel and unusual.

Anyway, glad he chose Capcom. I can't see Nintendo letting him make the stuff he made.

My goodness. What a horrible childhood he dealt with. If only his father could see him now and regret on what he's done to his son. Also, I was surprised to find out he was close to working with Nintendo. At least Capcom gave Nintendo some good games for us to play. Keep up the good work, Shinji.

Huh. I wonder if the Nemesis was inspired by that chain of events. Running from a never-tiring, unstoppable force you can't really fight back against?

I don't mean that in a 'ha ha' way, I mean that as a serious psychological question.

Hmm. As much as I feel for the guy, I have no idea who he is or why I should care specifically for him. Thousands upon thousands of kids are subjected to this kind (well, maybe EXACTLY this kind) of abuse. He creates games, big whoop, why is there an article about it?

I've never met a person who was hit as child say that. Care to prove me wrong?

I was hit as a child when I fucked up big time and damn thankful for it. But yes, this father is goddamn abominable.

Yeah, right here. I was a 'difficult' child to raise on the best of days. A little discipline went a long way.

I'd have thought that sort of childhood would have led into Silent Hill style games as opposed to jump scare games.

There is being punished through spankings and being abused. There is a difference. And it doesn't work for all children. Sometimes time outs work better, and some out of control shits need a good spanking. I know I did, and sometimes my kids do; sometimes they don't. Its the job of a parent to judge that.

OT: Good on him for moving past such a terrible ordeal. And yeah, pretty sure it totally effected his gaming efforts. It was probably quite cathartic.

Good for him. Shit like the car bit's un-needed. If your kid's realtively well behaved, shouldn't ever need to hit. Atleast IMO.
You just gotta find the balance of when to be tuff and when to let the foot down. Chasing your kid down the street with no shoes on, then having to walk home at night is just sadistic.
