Warren Ellis Wants YOU to Steampunk Batman

One of the most twisted (and brilliant) writers in the comic industry wants to see what you can do when Batman and the steampunk genre are combined.

Have you looked at Batman and always thought, "you know, this character needs a monocle and some steam-powered gadgetry"? So has Warren Ellis, apparently. The author is <a href=http://freakangels.com/whitechapel/comments.php?DiscussionID=9176&page=1>holding a contest on his website, where readers are encouraged to come up with steampunk-themed movie posters based on the character.

Here are Ellis's instructions:

"Immerse yourself in the era of Steampunk, and the coal-fired industrial nightmare of Gotham, where is set the popular silent films concerning The Batman. Or even The Bat-Man, if you prefer. There have been several such moving pictures to date, with titles like

THE MAGNIFICENT BAT-MAN
BATMAN RESPLENT
BATMAN, A FORMIDABLE CHAP INDEED
THE DARK KNIGHT, SPLID

...and the like. Your task is to design a poster, suitable for placement outside a cinematheque or other theatre, regarding one of these films."

Batman was originally given a steampunk incarnation in <a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gotham_By_Gaslight>Gotham By Gaslight, the first Elseworlds issue published by DC Comics, which was followed up by the less-awesome Batman: Master of the Future. Some of the submitted illustrations are great (like the one shown here, "The Bat-Man And The Boy Of Wonder, Robin, And The Machinations Of The Entirely Iniquitous And Socially Repugnant Poisonous Miss Pamela Isley", by Bevis), but the contest is still going on, so it's not too late to put your own design in.

Steampunk Batman?
I... I think my head just exploded. Could someone maybe call an ambulance? Thanks.

But there's no price to be won? A shame, really. This deserves a DC-honor-award!

I'd rather see a completely original steampunk graphic novel, but I suppose this is the next best thing.

Methinks those rather clever chaps and chapesses at Fallen London [http://echobazaar.failbettergames.com/] would be a dab hand at recreating the likeness of He of the Cowled Suit.

But then again, this idea has been postulated before on behalf of a certain group of gentlemen located within dual fortresses.

Just out of curiosity, when did the definition of "steampunk" become "slap a monocle and Victorian era puffy collar/cuffs onto someone?" That's not the steampunk I remember.

Steampunk-era Batman?

I think this might cover it. (No, I didn't do that. I wish I could draw half that well.)

Move along, nothing new here. Ellis is just showing how out of touch he is.

Batman has already been steampunked a few times... in facts it's all kinda boring now.

Oh, FUCK YES. I know I won't win, but I can't not submit something. And Warren Ellis, he is the King of Mad Genius. Whatever the outcome, it will be great.

I should mention that Ellis regularly runs that 'redesign' forum on his Whitechapel page for old comic and tv characters, where they take an old concept and remake it, it's great stuff with actual industry artists usually contributing, I think he runs it like every week or something.

Anyone reading Ellis' Supergod currently? I really like it, has a nice new take on the 'man creating their own gods' concept.
