Martin Aircraft: Putting the 'Segway' Back in 'Jetpack'

Finally, after years of teasing, the future is finally going to give us what it promised; commercially available Jetpacks.

Martin Aircraft, a New Zealand-based company, is about to enter the production phase for its new Jetpack creatively called ... The Martin Jetpack.

The Jetpack, which can fly for about 30 minutes at its top speed of 63mph, does not require a pilot's licence to fly, as its top speed and weight qualify it as an "ultralight" class air vehicle. Not only that, but the Jetpack itself is supposed to be very easy to operate.

"We're trying to make the world's easiest-to-fly aircraft. Our goal is to create a Segway for the sky, where the principles of flying would be very simple," says Richard Lauder, chief executive of Martin Aircraft.

The manufacturer is only going to produce 800 Jetpacks a year at first, but the $100,000 price tag will probably prevent a rush of Jetpack-enthusiasts.

"I certainly don't think it's going to be a George Jetson-sort-of-situation here, where there's one on every block, especially when the price starts out at $100,000," says Dick Knapinski, communications director for the Experimental Aircraft Association. "But I think you'll see a small section of people who would like to have one of those. I would do it in a second."

As would I, Dick. As would I.

My friends, the future is upon us. Soon jetpacks will be everywhere.
And it will be awesome.

I really wish I was rich right now. I'd buy one of those in a heartbeat.

*Sigh* Hate to be a killjoy but...

I can't wait for the flurry of lawsuit-inspired regulations to take all the fun out of owning one here.

...Not that I could ever afford one at 100k. But still.

Martin Jetpack

Such a dull name.

Why not The Darwinian Dynamics Probability Adjuster Thruster Pack

Or The Martin Vertical Velocity Facilitator.

I hope they cover their asses by making every purchaser sign a contract or term of uses agreement that will remove absolutely all liability(even malfunctions)

At first I was like "Jetpacks, hm that's cool..." Then I was like "It's for personal use? o_O God yes!" Then: "100,000$... Damn it."

Edit: Anyone else think it looks like a shiny version of the one they made on Mythbusters?

Except that the picture there doesn't show a jetpack at all. It's kinda like a backpack helicopter shown there.
A jet pack would require a jet to be expelled trough a nozzle somewhere to generate thrust, this guy does it using propellers. Completely different thing people...

So boss. Just... so boss.

Y'know, this could very well be the inspiration I need to get off my ass and go make some money. I want a feckin' Jetpack!

I want to know the fuel. I would love to fly back and forth to work, worth the $100,000. But if the fuel is to expensive, then it is not worth using it.

The fuel was the first question i had. I'm assuming it's some type of alcohol, but peroxide would be a good choice as well.

Jetpacks are a cool idea and all, but I wouldn't trust 'em no matter how safe they were supposed to be.

How bout a version that you need a sport aviation license? It would be able to faster and farther, and the license is a lot cheaper than a full pilot license.

I'm guessing it's going to get shut down right quick.

While it goes back years I know there are a lot of state laws that greatly limit personal flight. For example at one point Popular Mechanics did an issue with step by step instructions on how to build your own gyrocopters, making it clear how relatively easy and inexpensive it is for people to own their own flying machines. The reason why things like this never took off is because dealing with flying people is very difficult for the authorities. I mean how do you safely ground someone travelling through the air? What if they get drunk and crash into a house? How do you enforce tresspassing laws with people flying over the property of others at low altitude? If some dude decides to engage in arson (dropping say molotov cocktails) or takes potshots at people from the air what do you do about it? How do the police pursue if a criminal flees the scene by air? Not to mention all the questions of licensing and certification involved in getting pilots liscences which might be bypassed, and to be honest a lot of those requirements exist for people to make money off of them (some things pilots have to learn are irrelevent with modern technology, but the certification for them being complex enough to warrent special training, approval, and liscencing. Pilot's liscences not being cheap, and according to many, a giant scam).

Personal jetpacks have been around for a while, I mean many years ago there was a dude who flew one around outside the premiere of "Robocop 3" as a promotion. I believe there are specific places that also rent them to tourists around "The Grand Canyon" and the like. So it's not like this is some new technology either.

I'd guess the guys wanting to set this up aren't aware of the laws, or if they are, the laws are going to be rapidly changed to prevent these from being used. Sort of like how Segways were going to be some radical thing everyone would use, but they wound up getting banned in a lot of places.

I don't think this will catch on, even as a toy for rich people, and is liable to never decrease in price for people to have. No more than the "personal gyrocopter". I suppose at some point in the future with other supporting technologies, and an infrastructure to deal with people moving in three dimensions we might see it, but we'll probaby see world unity
(as I've rambled about) before that.

See, as cool as I think Jet Packs are, and as much as I'd love to have one personally, I'm one of those people would believe that there are too many problems with the idea. To put it bluntly, I wouldn't want guys either zipping through my yard on them, or zipping around above my car while I'm trying to drive (and perhaps losing control and crashing into the streets). Not to mention the off possibility of some drunk guy losing control and say smashing through one of my house windows in the middle of the night or whatever. This above and beyond the criminal possibilities I mentioned

... all that cool stuff action heroes do on Jet Packs in video games? That's exactly why people shouldn't have them at the moment. Especially seeing as it won't be an action hero doing that kind of thing, it's going to be some dumb rich kid who THINKS he's that action hero.

I'd rather just stick with a hang glider. Marauding around the planet like a dropship trooper sounds fun, sure, but I still think jet packs are supposed to go with frictionless "space" environments. But whatever.

...

DEY SEE ME PACKIN'. DEY HATIN'.
