Wonky Survey Paints Odd Picture of Japanese Arcades

Arcades have apparently fallen out of favor in Japan, or at least, with the 30 - 60 demographic.

Despite their new-found popularity with senior citizens [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/105896-Japanese-Retirees-Flocking-to-Arcades], the majority of the Japanese public never go to an arcade. That's according to a new survey, which seems to be trying its hardest to depict Japanese arcades as on their last legs, despite talking to people you wouldn't necessarily expect to find at an arcade anyway.

The survey collected the opinions of more than 12,000 members of the Japanese public. Of that number, a little over half were women, and nearly 90% were older than 30. The survey suggested that 61% of the Japanese public never go to an arcade, with more than half saying that they were too expensive and that they were too loud. Just over a quarter said that they stank of cigarette smoke and a tenth said that they were scary.

Of those who did attend arcades, crane games proved to be the most popular attraction, followed by "medal games" - a type of slot machine that uses tokens rather than coins - and then other, non-crane based prize games. The kind of games that you might consider more typical arcade fair, like light gun games or fighting games, were rather unpopular, with only a small percentage of those surveyed saying they played them.

When you consider that the survey essentially ignores the youth demographic - the opinions of 2,786 people in their fifties are recorded, compared to just 191 in their teens - the number of people who attend arcades is actually surprisingly high. It would be interesting though, to see the study repeated with a more representative age range. That way, we could get a more complete picture of just how well arcades are doing.

I dunno what an Aracde is, but it seems a hit with the older demographics, and I'd like to congratulate Japan on that. It is notoriously hard to appeal to such people, and Japan seem to have made a good job of it.

2, 786 to 191 is really a lot, its really sad to see surveys that are biased, it just destroys its meaning.

Ooh! I can do this, too!

In other news, a recent survey, of which 90 percent were below the age of 18, states that a majority of people never go to Rolling Stones concerts, with more than half stating they were too loud and incoherent, over a quarter stating they stank of Icy Hot and Fibersure, and 10 percent saying they were very scary.

I remember playing in a Japanese Arcade while my brother and I waited to see Batman Begins. I remember a few elderly people laughing at my horrible driving in one of the racing games.

Did like the selection. Numerous instrument games, tons of the classic light gun shooters (I will never tire of the Time Crisis series) as well as an F-Zero motion simulator racing game that read saved data from GameCube cards.

I don't know what the hell these guys were trying to prove. Japan is the arcade capital of the world. How many countries have online arcade games and arcade machines built for tournament play?

We've got Casino on Goodge Street, and Trocadero.

That's it. Compared to their Japanese counterparts, they're not even arcades. That being said, we have Street Fighter...

The arcades are doing absoloutly fine, Perhaps on an early monday afternoon they're pretty quiet, but the evenings and especially the weekends they are packed, with pretty long queues for the new games.
And a lot of the arcades are 3 or 4 floors filled with all types of games.
And yeah, in all the times I've gone to English arcades they've never come close to the Japanese arcades I go to.

At least they have arcades in Japan. All the ones over in Texas have closed down. I miss the days where I would dead leg my friend for beating me in MVC2.

I think the most important statistics are not who's going to arcades these days, but why, as displayed on one of the Versus City pie charts: http://www.versuscity.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/question3.jpg

Most people are going to arcades to kill time; waiting for their train, nothing better to do, etc. About the same number of people are going to arcades as an outing with friends and family, people who were or still are arcade enthusiasts to some degree.

Only 27.5% are going to arcades to enjoy the games, and there is most likely some overlap with the demographic who those who go to the arcade with family and friends.

25.1% go to win prizes; these are players of UFO catchers and other games. Little more than half of Japanese arcade-goers play the crane games. Insanity. 6.7% were playing the sports and fighting games, incredible seeing as I remember a Staurday in my youth where 15-20 were crowding around the new King of Fighters '98 all day (approximately 11:00 A.M. to 8:45 P.M.).
Ah, nostalgia.

10.9% go to the arcades to "enjoy new trends". I suppose this means they want to play new games that aren't available for consoles yet.

Interestingly, there's no measurement of people who go to arcades to practice. Probably because this number is probably a fraction of a percent, which probably includes the "no answer" crowd who suspect that the surveyors were probably trying to steal their godlike Yomi powers.

The distribution of male to female is about right, with females slightly outnumbering males in Japan. The representation of youth is small because the population of Japan is aging. They have
a high life expectancy and a birth rate that is actually low enough to lead to population decline. The net result of this is that the number of children and teenagers for arcades to appeal to is small and projected to continue shrinking [http://www.economist.com/blogs/dailychart/2010/11/japans_population].

I live here in Japan, and there are still lots of multi story arcades and plenty of people in them. Outside of the major train stations it is harder to see dedicated arcade buildings (like 8 floors of arcades), but usually there is at least a floor attatched to the bigger pachinko palors and places like Donkihote (Don Quixote). Most are 2-4 floors of aracades and another few floors for bowling and pool/billiards all in one convenient center. And yes anywhere for 1/4 to 1/3 are those strangely alluring crane games, usually on the first floor to actract the young girls for who the crane game is like catnip.
Oh and i;ve seen in just one trip a 6 floor line for the new gundam fighter tournament with anthor two floor line for the new vocaloid gsme. new stuff gets crazy popular here.

It's weird, I actually have seen a couple machines like that where I live in the US, like Street Fighter IV and Tekken 6. Unfortunately, it's because they were directly imported and probably aren't actually hooked up to the internet. And I think one of them, DJ MAX Technika, is actually Korean.

And I once waste almost a month searching for a possibly-mystical Arcana Heart 2 machine somewhere in my county...

Lies! <url=http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/6551/1000717q.jpg>Those things are awesome, once you get past the creepy stuff. They're where I got all but two pieces of my figure collection.

They're also weirdly expansive. Never thought I'd see food being offered in a crane game. Let alone one that was f*%#king rigged.

...I'm so damn jealous of you right now. I can still picture the three arcades near Yokohama station with perfect clarity. The arcades are one of the major things I miss about my stay in Japan.

Besides, you know...the general atmosphere, the convenience stores, the scenery, the historical sites, the cherry trees, and my dormitory.
