It's more of a trope. MANY web comics have pets for no aparent reason. Right here on the escapist critical miss has the hamster. Many times it's for comic relief or to upgrade the cutness factor. I think it has some relation with the Team pet trope [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TeamPet].
