More VGA Trailers Than You Can Sneeze At: The Roundup Post

We saw quite a few new trailers at the Spike Video Game Awards, and here they are.

The Spike VGAs are partly an embarrassing frat-house party that affirms all of gaming's worst stereotypes to the outside world, and partly a giant press conference in which publishers tease new games to a captive audience. That said, for all the negatives, we at least get some really cool new trailers out of the whole thing.

In case you missed it (and we don't blame you), here are all the new trailers we saw Saturday night.

entirely new engine [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106052-Elder-Scrolls-Turns-V-at-Spike-VGAs], TES5 takes players north to the land of Skyrim, where - judging from the trailer - they will fight evil dragons made out of stone. That's twice as bad as regular evil dragons.

Mass Effect 3 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106053-Mass-Effect-3-Trailer-Confirms-Earth-is-Screwed]: After a good month's worth of teasing, it's official - BioWare's mystery game is the one that we all knew was coming. The Reapers have made their way to Earth, devastating humanity's defenses, and only Commander Shepard can set things right.

Insane [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106054-Guillermo-del-Toros-Insane-Announced-Insanely-Early]: We don't have any idea what director Guillermo del Toro's game will be about, only that he's making it in conjunction with THQ and that it looks like it'll be pretty darn freaky. Oh, and that we won't see it until after the apocalypse in 2013.

Batman: Arkham City [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106055-Torturous-Hugo-Strange-Shows-Up-in-Batman-Arkham-City]: The follow-up to one of the best games of 2009 has Batman facing off against the villainous Hugo Strange, an evil genius psychologist who deduces the identity of the man behind the mask. The trailer features lots of people getting punched in the face. That's all I want, really.

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106056-Naughty-Dog-Puts-Uncharted-3-in-Motion-at-VGAs]: The third installment of "Nathan Drake shoots people and wisecracks" will see our intrepid explorer/tomb raider searching for the "Atlantis of the Desert" with old pal Sully and getting himself stranded in the middle of the desert amidst the burning wreckage of a cargo plane. It was probably his fault that the plane crashed, though. He has terrible luck with that sort of thing.

mind-breaking gameplay [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106057-Portal-2-Bots-Built-to-Be-Friends-in-Cute-Teaser], but it does show us that the game's co-op bots are really, really cute together.

presence of T-Pain [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106058-Resistance-3-Keeps-Resisting-in-First-Gameplay-Footage].

Prototype 2 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106059-Prototype-2-Pits-Mutated-Hero-Versus-Mutated-Hero]: In the first game, Alex Mercer killed lots of people. He also injected Sgt. James Heller with the same virus that mutated him. Now, James Heller is out for revenge on the hero of the first game, before Alex's superior popularity makes him the protagonist again three-quarters of the way into the story. No wait, I'm thinking of Gundam SEED Destiny.

SSX: Deadly Descents [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106060-New-SSX-Brings-Extreme-Sports-to-the-Death-Zone]: A bunch of extreme-sports yahoos take the definition of "extreme sports" a bit too far. Snowboarders leap out of helicopters on the most dangerous peaks in the world, and the entire thing looks like someone was playing slightly too much Call of Duty while working on the trailer premise.

And now, the ones we hadn't previously covered:

Forza Motorsport 4: Even if Microsoft can't use the long delays of Gran Turismo 5 to its advantage anymore, Forza 4 looks very pretty.

[gametrailers=708345]

Thor: God of Thunder: Not to be confused with the recent movie trailer [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106047-Official-Thor-Trailer-Strikes-With-the-Might-of-Mjolnir], of course. It's a tie-in game, and it looks like one, but people do get hit in the face with lightning-imbued hammers.

[gametrailers=708343]

Mortal Kombat: Yeah, it looks like Mortal Kombat. No surprises here, unless you count God of War's Kratos showing up. I guess that's kind of a surprise.

[gametrailers=708349]

Which are you most excited about? Why not answer that question in our Daily Poll [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106046-Question-of-the-Day-December-13-2010]?

God of Thunder might LOOK good, but we all know how it actually will be. I stopped watching when the SSX preview came on, I knew at that point, nothing further would interest me.
ME3, Skyrim, Batman :D

The announcement of Skyrim is really the only one that intrigues me. While I found Oblivion an interesting game, I lost a very good chunk of my life to Morrowind. Here's hoping for a magnificent game.

I was kind of dissapointed the big Bioware reveal wasn't something else. We all knew ME3 was coming. Would have been nice to see something new. Another thing I didn't care for was the fact that there was not even a hint of real gameplay in most, if any, of them. Pre-rendered cutscenes don't impress me much.

Of course, I'm still looking forward to Batman, Skyrim, ME3, and Portal 2.

HA! Thanks for reminding me about that. Poor, stupid subpar Anakin...I mean Shinn.

Still, how does one kill the personification of a racist virus?

TES V: Skyrim of course!

Whole new engine means steppign away from the Oblivion/Fallout weirdness and hopefully returning to the awesome Elder Scrolls experience I had in Morrowind.

I couldn't be happier that this is finally happening :D

I thought that MK trailer with Kratos was a joke at first. Always skeptical about those fighting games bringing in guest stars (like Darth Vader and Yoda...).

My vote is for Skyrim.

I was hoping Biowares announcement was a new game, because I'm not a massive fan of Mass Effect, but I am of a certain other bioware game. *Ahem* Avatar.

The fact that Sykrim was announced was enough to make me excited, as Oblivion and Morrowind are my favourite games, but now I've found out that it has a new engine...

I'm super excited! :D

Out of those only Mass Effect 3 and Portal 2 excite me, and in that order.

The Mass Effect 3 trailer was superb.

I was going to mention that, is that a part of the Dragon Age DLC "Lelianas' Song"? It happens to be the only DA:O DLC I haven't gotten round to playing yet and it looks familiar.

Biggest Reveal for me: Kratos for Mortal Kombat and Uncharted 3.

Unsurprising Reveals: Portal 2 and Mass Effect 3.

Kratos gets huge bonus because its a fighting game that is perfectly in his element. Uncharted for showing us how unexpectedly intriguing the game will become.

Portal 2...REALLY great game...but not really a reveal. Mass Effect 3, didn't we know this game was coming? and 2 how is this even a new game that Bioware is doing? I'm excited for it yes, but when you put in the line "New game" I was kinda expecting a game that wasn't related to Shepard.

I got kinda excited at the God of Thunder thing, because I remember playing another game called that AGGGGESSS ago. It was a fun 2D action-puzzle-adventure thing. Unfortunately Thor seems to have fallen in with the "Like God of War But" crowd :(

as for the rest: Skyrim: I would like to own and play. I keep missing out on the elder scrolls games and I want to get in there and be messing with all the mods :D

Prototype 2: Kinda bummed that its set in the city again. There are some cool ideas I had that I thought would be included and I'm annoyed it looks like the original but prettier.

Yeah, It's from Lelianas' Song.
It's a good piece of DLC for Leliana's story, and it's quite funny, but the gameplay and settings are pretty standard. I just love the character.
