Behold The (Possible) Steampunk Origin of Darth Vader

Believe it or not, George Lucas may have been inspired to create Darth Vader's look by a 19th century rescue mask.

The Star Wars franchise has been <a href=http://www.google.com/images?q=steampunk+star+wars&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=rWUJTdjKCo20sAPLlKnhDg&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CCcQsAQwAA&biw=1096&bih=966>a popular subject for steampunk adaptation over the years. However, it turns out that at least some of the character designs in George Lucas's universe might have been based on some steampunk-esque technology, based on some gear that a collector has recently put on display.

Steve Erenberg, has been a collector of weird industrial artifacts with an emphasis on medical and science devices. However, two of his finds that he's recently put on display definitely look like they're things Lucas himself would have designed ... except they're over a hundred years old.

According to Erenberg:

This pair of early rescue masks, shown above, dates from between the mid-1800s and World War I. They look a bit familiar, right? Almost 100 years before Darth Vader and C-3PO hit the big screen in "Star Wars" in 1977, these two smoke helmets were worn by firefighters carrying out rescues in smoke-logged buildings. The buzz among collectors is that George Lucas's designers must have found inspiration in these smoke helmets and others like them. In fact, one well-known 19th-century manufacturer was named Vajen-Bader-you could easily get the name Vader from that.

The black leather helmet on the left is labeled "Respirations Apparat" by "G.B.Konic Altona," was made in Hamburg, Germany, and has the look of an African Dan mask. The brass, three-quarter face mask to its right was made in Paris by J. Mandet. This type of breathing mask had a very simple apparatus, allowing only a short range of operation. When used, air would be forced into the helmet through no more than 13 meters of flexible tubing by means of a bellows operated remotely from the outside. Both of these masks have mica lenses to help protect the eyes from heat.

So while this isn't direct evidence that Lucas's designers took their inspiration from some pretty cool antiques, it does seem like a reasonable possibility. After all, these masks are certainly cool-looking, and they do have more than a passing resemblance to both Darth Vader and C-3PO. What do you think? Secret origin revealed, or crazy coincidence?

I find these to be way scary.

Rescue Worker: "I'm here to save you."

Burning Man: "Okay, but will it cost me my soul?!?!"

I heard George Lucas had the idea of Darth Vader jumping onto another ship's hull in space. THAT SOUNDS SO BADASS I CRIED.

The black one on the left reminds me of the Pyro from TF2 as much as it does Darth Vader, but the one on the right screams C-3PO.

Surely they must have written something about character design inspiration? Surely it can't be an industry secret? There's been libraries worth of material written by those involved, surely one of them has published concept art, research or even been interviewed on the subject. They'd all be alive too, it wasn't so long ago as to cull the entire creative team (yet not long enough for Lucas to avoid culling the franchise, damn Jar-Jar). You tell me...

tahts cool. WW1 gas helmets definately sound... well logical at least. Its all speculation, but its kinda odd that Lucas took so much influence from World wars.

I read an article that stated that Lucas had said that his inspiration for Vader's helmet was an old Cadillac, not that mask. *shrugs* Who knows?

It's the Machine Man from Fritz Lang's Metropolis, if anyone reading this doesn't recognize it.

However, you can pretty easily see a progression between the three designs, and the influence of the eerily similar mask is unlikely.

I doubt that Vader was inspired by the mask in the article either, although I suppose it is possible. I think it's more likely that the design was based off of the African masks that the rescue mask itself resembles.

this one actually looks more menacing than the finished one, idk, it just has more of that "I'm fucking serious" effect, if you know what I mean
