Duke Nukem Trilogy Details Revealed

We're not entirely sure how it's going to work, but Duke Nukem will be spending some time in World War II in the upcoming Duke Nukem Trilogy for the DS and PSP.

"We plan on making Duke the Forrest Gump of World War II," Shacknews [http://www.apogeesoftware.com/index.php]. "It was really Duke that sunk the Bismarck. It wasn't the British." Nagy went on to say that Duke was responsible for victory at the battle of Iwo Jima, adding, "[Apogee CEO] Scott [Miller] absolutely loved the storyline, claiming that it was 'absolutely Duke.'"

Differences between the Sony PSP [http://www.nintendo.com/ds] versions of the game were also described in greater detail. In announcing the game, Apogee said the titles would share the same storyline but would take advantage of the strengths of their respective platforms to offer differing gameplay options. Nagy revealed that the DS version of the game will feature side-scrolling levels, first-person "sniper portions" and top-down jetpack shooting sections, while the PSP release will have no side-scrolling, but will offer both first-person and third-person gameplay and over-the-shoulder jetpack shooting.

Storyline details remain scarce, but Critical Mass, the opening entry in the Trilogy, will put Duke in the future, while the second title, Chain Reaction, will see him turned loose in the present day. The final game, Proving Grounds, will feature the hero in World War II action that will finally explain his origins. While the PSP and DS versions of the game remain Apogee's primary focus, Nagy claimed a PC release of the game remains a possibility, saying, "We aren't ruling it out."

The M-rated dialog, excessive violence and strippers of Duke's past may be gone on the DS, however, as Nagy revealed that Apogee is looking at different approaches to "certain graphic situations" in order to satisfy Nintendo's concerns about adult game content on its consoles. "We have the opportunity to reestablish [Duke] to younger players while keep Duke as edgy as ever," he said. "Duke has been gone for awhile."

So not ripping off "Big Dave" from 2000AD at all then?

Actually, so we have an American Hero winning WW2 for us...So, no change from Hollywood there then.

And people wonder why others get mad at the Americans...

Of all the places Duke could have gone, he had to go back in time and go to WWII.

he's Duke Nukem for god's sake, if he's truely bad ass he can go anywhere, anytime, anyplace, and go there without an oxygen tank.

Oh wait, something just hit me; They're actually working on Duke Nukem? Where the hell is Forever? Stop being like iNiS and work on what we really want (ironically, i have no interest with Duke Nukem whatsoever.)

One interview mentioned that Duke actually sank the Bismarck.

And also..."Explaining Origins"...Does anyone get that "Phantom Menace" feeling again?

Let me guess, the Pigs are now going to be wearing black facepaint and eating watermelons?

I dunno the more I want to get excited about this, the more I get a sinking feeling.

Ugh, this doesn't help. It got to young gamers because ~12 year olds everywhere love doing things they know they shouldn't, and more mature gamers love when a game isn't afraid to drop and F bomb or show a kidney flying across the screen post-rocket. It worked last generation (lifespan, not console), why not this one? I have a PSP, not a DS though, and the article specifically states "DS", so maybe the PSP version will have the bewbs and cursing intact?

I'm honestly trying to hope for the best here.

EDIT: Forgot to put something, as usual...

I think the developers have crossed the dirty great big line between 'a charming satire of masculinity and frat-boy humour' and 'offending the British'.

Well, as a British citizen, I'm more than a little pissed at seeing this 'America single handedly defeated the Nazis' attitude yet again. Ever heard of the Battle of Britain? I'm not normally one for patriotism, but that's a historical moment that does make me feel proud. And at the rate Hollywood, EA and chums are going, soon that's going to be a victory for the Yanks as well.

Indeed, not wishing to sound like some sort of flag-waving conservative, but the idea of Duke Nukem wandering in and saving the day is hugely disrespectful to the soldiers who gave their lives in battles such as Iwo Jima. I have as much of a sense of humour as the next man, but you wouldn't suggest that Nukem marched in and saved the Jews from the concentration camps. Why should Iwo Jima and the Bismarck be different?
o be honest, you do have a point, but the major focus of those type of games is Americans (mind you, I'm one of them and don't touch them... at all). To be honest, most that play are the stereotypical Americans, as well. This is coming from a Gamestop employee who is selling most of the WWII drivel.

BUT, have no fear, play CoD4. The Brits are the heroes there with the SAS. Totally bad-ass, as well. That manly mustache and sideburns was epic... :D

I don't really give a crap if the dialogue is raped. These games were fun. I'd buy it on my PSP no matter what. And since Playstation is less for 8-year-olds, they might not dumb it down for the PSP ^^

Ah, the optimism of youth.

And 'Edgy' goes in the same portion of my hatred as "Wacky" and "Zany".

Are you kidding? As over-the-top as this premise is, I would be downright disappointed if he didn't.

I guess this means Forever is going to get bumped a few more years back.
How can you add to infinity? I'd love to know how, but I understand a magician mustn't reveal his tricks.

I was intrigued at the start of the article.

I was disinterested by the end.

Maybe I should've gotten a PSP after all.

As for the Brits: oh shut the Hell up. Duke Nukem is retarded over the top humor. If he was a British creation the same thing would've happened. It's also not like we're the only country that does this kind of shit with our entertainment. Earth Defense Force 2017, the last country left alive against an alien invasion is the Japanese. You can't tell me that British films are centered on their own country, or Germans on their own, or Italians, or French, or what have you.

People in America know America and can relate to America the best. It's a simple fact, and it works for all countries, and that's how it will always work for any piece of mainstream media.

I mean, you're criticizing fucking Duke Nukem for Christ's sake! Get the stick out of your "arse"!
