Sony: Uptake of 3D TV Will Outpace High Definition

Gaming will be a big incentive to get people to switch to 3D equipment says Sony's Andrew House.

Sony Europe boss House thinks that 3D movies, TV shows, and games will be a bigger hit with consumers than high definition media was, and that the adoption of the technology will be much quicker.

House thought that the shift to 3D would depend on having the content available, and that it was a good sign that UK broadcasters like Sky - whose role in promoting HD TV he said had been very significant - were already supporting 3D. He acknowledged, however, that economic considerations would likely slow the transition.

Rather than there being a particular tipping point when everyone jumped on the 3D bandwagon, he thought that the adoption of 3D TV would be a more gradual process and said that 3D gaming - which was an experience he thought was difficult to replicate outside the home environment - would be a key factor in getting people to switch.

It's hard to see people replacing perfectly good high definition televisions just for 3D, but with the backing of broadcasters, and the eventual reduction in price of 3D equipment, the technology will almost certainly become a lot more commonplace. Unfortunately, it's hard to agree or disagree with House assessment of when that will be, because the timeline he proposes is so vague.

I can see 3D becoming big one day, but I think they need to get rid of the glasses. I can't see anyone coming home after a long day at the office, grabbing a beer, sitting down on the couch, and putting on their Star Trek glasses to watch a football game.

I guess this guy hasn't opened his window to hear pretty much the whole world complaining about 3D then?

Seriously, I can't round a corner anymore without hearing someone talking about how useless they think it is...

I personally hate the shit out of it. I tried out a few games in 3D, only to become violently oppose to them. Even with the new glasses and getting rid of the red/blue thing, it's not really worth a damn. 3D movies hardly seem worth it. I checked out the new Tron movie and while it was fine, the 3D bits were annoying. There was one cool memorable part with the 3D, but then they repeated it, destroying the coolness.

I think 3D is a way of trying to negate the fact that people can't make movies or games worth a damn, so they make them 3D to compensate. It's like making up for a small penis by getting genital warts.

Yeah, no it wont.

It still boggles my mind how people who went to school to learn how to become market analysts can so categorically be wrong. Well perhaps its not their fault. Basically any time you make a proclamation "THis is the new big thing"your going to end up with people chomping at the bit to prove them wrong.

If you want 3d to take off, how about you just stop talking about it for a while and let it run its course.

I think people are vastly underestimating the buying power that the lemmings of society have.

As soon as they can focus that stereoscopic 3D onto televisions, so that we don't need those glasses, I could see this being possible. But as a large percentage of the gaming community is still fairly vocal against it, I don't know if it will happen. But, then, 2010 was supposed to be the year for High Def, so maybe it's good I'm not an analyst.

I think this might happen but only if they significantly decrease the price for the TV and the glasses and get more broadcaster support. like maybe a separate channel for 3d viewing only.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Come talk to me when you don't need glasses.
Or the glasses aren't $200 a pop.

Then I'll consider getting a 3D TV. That is, if my current LCD (Which I love) dies at that time.
Otherwise, I'm enjoying my 1080p at 40", and have zero reason to get another TV.
Especially for something that's as barely supported as 3D.

It won't happen as long as 3D relies on a method that does not work for at least 10-15% of the population, and requires goofy expensive glasses.

I've tried 3D both in the movies (Avatar) and in gaming (on a PS3), and both make me feel ill. The dimmed screen and flat colours do not particularly make me want to retry it either.

Way too soon if you ask me. 3D went from "back again but still green behind the ears" to "BAM, BRING IT ON SUCKAS" They missed a few steps making a lot of mistakes in the meantime. And now people are sick of 3D. They really need to slow down.

Sorry, let me catch my breath, I can't stop laughing so hard.

*Even the best tech gurus have said it won't catch on that great unless they improve the technology.

Is this the same whole world that spent $2,740,405,721 on Avatar at the box office?

They should focus on making the glasses you need to buy less than $200 a piece and allow you wear them for more than an hour without getting a headache.

But 3D is the next HD! How can something outpace itself?

Honestly, the excitement over 3D TVs has seemed to die down, if there ever was any in the first place.

For fuck's sake Sony, enough with the god damn 3DTV statements every two weeks already. I am sick of hearing about it. Yes we get it, you make 3DTVs and you want people to buy them. Nobody really cares though so SHUT UP ALREADY. Take your 3DTVs and shove them in your mouth so you can't talk about the damn things anymore.
