Don't Start The Clock Just Yet: Fox Rejects 24 Movie Script

Jack Bauer won't be sprinting to theaters anytime soon, as 20th Century Fox has turned down the first script for a 24 film.

It was no coincidence that the series finale of the Fox show 24 was the perfect jumping-off point for a feature film. That project has encountered a setback, though, as 20th Century Fox has rejected the first submitted script for the feature film follow-up. The writer responsible for bringing 24 to the big screen, who now has to go back to the proverbial drawing board, is Billy Ray, the writer of Flightplan, Breach, and State of Play.

The film will star Kiefer Sutherland, reprising his role as CTU agent Jack Bauer, and Tony Scott (Top Gun, Man on Fire, Unstoppable) is attached to direct. Judging by the way he tiptoes around the project, it seems like Howard Gordon, the producer of both the series and, presumably the film, thinks it may never happen. Gordon tells Entertainment Weekly, "there is talk about re-approaching it. I understand Tony Scott is meeting with Kiefer to talk about ideas. People are still talking about it."

In talking to EW about the series finale last May, Sutherland noted that the movie would not follow the show's signature real-time format, explaining, "something we've dealt with in the series is how the crisis always has to come to us because we don't have time to move anywhere in a real time world. In a two-hour representation of the 24 world, planes, trains, and automobiles all of a sudden become a factor because you are not required to go scene by scene in real time." I will miss the real-time aspect, but as long as the film still has lots of Bauer shouting "damn it, Chloe!" I'm there.

Damn it Chloe! I was looking forward to this!

Here's hoping they figure something out. While I did love how Season 8 ended, I do feel there's room for one more story to tie everything up perfectly.

Also, I miss Renee :(

Fox rejected it? Fuck
Now I know it was awesome >(
Damn, there goes the one joke I had on this subject. Now I got nothing!

OT: Let's hope that by the time the movie comes out, people will still care.

Why would they make a 24 movie? The concept of the show is that each episode is an actual hour so that would mess things up. Also, this kind of series (the ones where a season is just one story) dont need a movie. The actual series format is better since it tells a longer story with more detail and twists (24 needs time to develop a decent plot).

If you want the movie just watch a season in a row. Its just like a big ass movie. :)

The title of the show itself negates the idea of a movie.
Unless they rename it "2".

Considering how big the TV series was, I can't imagine how much they must have hated it to flat out REJECT the script

Well, that's one of the more hilarious shots of Kiefer Sutherland, I've ever seen...

a 24 movie? that's got to be the stupidest thing I've heard since DC tried to get Alan Moore to write a sequel to Watchmen.

The whole gimmick behind the show is that it follows a story line throughout an entire day without cutting ahead in time. Unless they intend to make the film 24 hours long, that defeats the entire premise, you've just got a movie where Kiefer Sutherland fights terrorists.

Guess they could call the movie 2.5 and the title would at least make sense, but two and a half hours is barely enough time to explain the ridiculously contrived plot

It was Bauer facing off against Chuck Norris. Fox decreed it was too awesome and that it would destroy the world with its sheer awesomeness, so it was canned.

Goddammit! I'm up to the last couple of episodes on the final series and I don't want it to end. Jack's busy executing fools left, right and centre. Poor guy probably does need a break.
