World of Tanks Claims New Concurrent User World Record

World of Tanks, the armored Russian MMO currently in beta testing for the West, has claimed a new world record for the maximum number of concurrent users on a single server.

I'd never even heard of World of Tanks until a few weeks ago but apparently it's very big in, you guessed it, Russia, where the game is live and running under a free-to-play model. So big, in fact, that yesterday the development team at Wargaming.net [http://wargaming.net/index.php] claimed a new world record for the number of peak concurrent users playing on a single game server with a whopping 74,536 tankers duking it out on the battlefield.

"The online peak has been growing steadily for the past several weeks, and the PCCU numbers shown by both World of Tanks versions are just astonishing. We are extremely proud of the scale of popularity the game has managed to gain so far," said Wargaming.net CEO Victor Kislyi. "The fact that Western and Russian players keep on joining the ranks of virtual tank commanders makes us believe that more records are to come."

The western version of World of Tanks is still in closed beta but also doing very well for itself, ringing up a PCCU personal best of 16,070 users on December 29, 2010.

World of Tanks is a team-based MMO that simulates armored warfare in the mid-20th century, when fire-spitting behemoths were the kings of the battlefield. The game features over 150 German, Soviet and U.S. vehicles prowling terrain ranging from open fields to claustrophobic city streets in a massive struggle for global dominance. If you think that sounds as hot as I do, check out worldoftanks.com [http://www.worldoftanks.com] to learn more!

It is from Belarus. Great game though probably the most fun I have had with an MMO in a long, long while.

I've been a tester since August, and it's one of the best games I've had the pleasure to play.
Whilst there is a fair bit of grinding (you can't reall quest like WoW), and I've noticed a few technical/historical innacuracies, it is a brilliant experience to play it, it has a great player base.

Wargaming.net have created something awsome here.
I highly recomend that other tread-heads apply to be a tester.

I believe I have a beta key for that game, I might be thinking about another though.

It's a Belarussian game, they're based in Minsk. Glad to see them doing well though, will be checking it out eventually.

Why no British tanks?
Erm... I was told by one Mod (I think Mod) it was because 'you Brits had very few interesting tanks during the period, most were Lend-Lease' - which is complete and utter bollocks, ignoring prototypes that never left the drawing board, I can think of plenty of tanks...
There are 3 British tanks as 'premiums' (gold buys) on the Russian list (Valentine II, Churchill IV, Matilda II CS converted with Russian 76mm howitzer) and one Anglo-Canadian premium (Ram-Mk II) on the American list.

French tanks are coming next. Then the Brits.
TBH, I don't mind. So far, with the Russkies, Germans and Americans, there is an interesting flavour. Americans are fast but weak armour, medium guns, Germans are (usually) slow but heavy hitting and with heavy armour, whilst the Russians are sort of all-rounders.

I'm fairly certain that the British Army invented the modern tank in around 1914-1916 during WWI and were the first to call them (water) tanks to fool enemy spies.
I would thought being the inventor of the focal point of the game would mean there were a few british tanks in the game at least.

I could of course be totally wrong.

This game is great fun and it's very easy to just jump in for some quick matches even if you don't have a lot of time (battles last 15 mins tops, but are usually over quicker than that). Also you if you're dead you don't have to wait for the battle to end, you can just exit battle and hop in another tank (at least once you have more than one tank) or you can just stay and watch.

It takes a lot of play to unlock the top tier tanks, but since the matchmaking tries to match you up with equivalent tier tanks (at least when it's not having spasms) there is in general no big hurry to get there and sometimes the lower tier battles can be a lot more fun.

If they set the price for gold right, I think this game will do really well and make quite a bit of money as it is doing in Russia.

@LLamastorm.games - yes, the British (Ordanance Board, of Navy and Army) created the Land Ship program in 1915, with 'Mother' entering production as 'Tank' MKI in 1916.
However, the game is mostly WW2 - 1950, with some 1928+ vehicles as the game-starters.

@Percutio - the French tree looks brillaint, the only problem being tanks in the 1942-46 period. Their 1950's machines look terrific.

If the proposed British tree someone posted on their forum is the actual one, I will be mightily pissed off. Firefly as premium? Bugger that.

The fan-made Italian tree was very interesting to read through, if only because there were far more Italian tanks during '39-45 than I though (not including prototypes)

I really enjoy this game. Rolling around a corner in a Tiger tank is something few games let you do. Hunting with big-cats is fun.

I really keep forgetting to play this, despite having the game installed and an account set up for like 2 months now.

Looks cool.

I may try it out when it's released if it's F2P

As long as I get a Baneblade

I also hope you can run over buildings like in Battlefield 1943. I used to hide inside a building, wait for enemies to show up, and then blast out the other side like a mechanised Kool-Aid Man of death.

That... Was quite possibly one of the coolest lines I've ever read from a user on these forums.

OT: I've never heard of this, but it sounds awesome. Doubt my Lappy could play it though.
