Angry Birds Catapulted Into Board Gaming

The Angry Birds weren't content with unleashing their anger in digital form, and have gone analog.

Angry Birds isn't just moving from platforms like Android and iOS to the PlayStation Network [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106581-Angry-Birds-Crashing-Onto-PSN-This-Week], it's also pulling a reverse Tron and entering the real world. Mattel revealed Angry Birds: Knock on Wood at CES 2011 this week, a board game version of the popular mobile app.

In the digital version of Angry Birds, players must fling multiple types of birds at varying structures to retrieve their eggs from evil pigs. Knock on Wood works in a similar way, but with physical representations of the game's characters and building materials.

Two to four players take turns choosing mission cards that reveal structures which must be built. One player builds the structure and puts the pig(s) on top, while another must use the included catapult to fling a miniature Angry Bird at it to score points. The first player to accumulate a set amount of points wins.

The Knock on Wood box comes with three replica Angry Birds figurines, four pigs, a slingshot launcher, 14 blocks, and 56 mission cards. The birds included are the unibrowed mascot red bird, the speedy yellow bird, and the explosive black bird. No, it doesn't actually explode in real life.

I wish more games would follow suit. How about a VVVVVV [http://store.steampowered.com/app/70300/] board game with magnets? Angry Birds: Knock on Wood will be available for $14.99 in May 2011.

That is epic sauce.
Though not exactly a board game, seeing as it doesn't involve the use of a board at all...

Dropping a toy soldier from the top of my stairs at school worked reasonably well as a substitute till then.

I liked the reverse Tron, ahaha. But OT: Really? We didn't need this at all, the time and money spent making this could be used on making more games (electronic games, not some board game...if you can even call this a board game?).

A game based on Homsar from Homestar Runner?

(I kid, I kid; I did a google search and saw what you were talking about. But that scream is a bit of a recurring gag with the character I mentioned. Incidentally, isn't Daily Drop really that idea in real life?)

I see it more as an expanded action figure line that has an associated game. At only $15, it's kind of cheap.

Ugh, that game leaves a bad taste in my mouth considering it was totally stolen from a small flash game that never took off.

Ah, Crossbows and Catapults for the digital age.

Will they have spotty whipper-snappers replacing the elastic bands with ever stronger ones in an effort to find the sweet spot between damage caused and destroying the firing item?

This will fit nicely into my collection.

Hope delivery from the US isn't too expensive. :)

What's the game?

Second if only every knock off was that good.

Third it was their 20th attempt at a game or something like that so I'd cut them a little slack :p.

I have a feeling this will be like Mouse Trap. We never bothered with the rules or dice. Just kept on making the trap go off.

It's like, EXACTLY the same thing, except I actually like Crush the Castle better.

Actually, now that I look at it.....CtC has over 20 million plays, maybe it WASN'T that small, kinda increases the chance it was stolen from that though

Thanks for the link :).

I'd just be cautious of the assumption that similarity entails theft.

Otherwise we need to figure out who CtC stole it from since it would be established that the only way you could create this concept in it's entirety is to steal it from another source :).

Don't get me wrong, you could be right, just saying that it's quite a leap to assume that two entities can't come to the same conclusion without meeting one another. It's happened many times in ancient astronomy (a time when stealing the ideas of someone thousands of miles away was quite a feat).
