Big 80s Pop Stars Battle Big Monsters On SyFy

80s pop cherubs Tiffany and Debbie Gibson are fighting giant reptiles (and each other) in this weekend's original SyFy movie.

SyFy's Saturday Night movies are infamous for their Ed Wood-like quality, largely due to their cheesy effects, hammy acting, and generally ridiculous plots. This summer's <a href=http://www.amazon.com/Sharktopus-Eric-Roberts/dp/B004FHCHAU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1296062103&sr=8-1>Sharktopus (produced by Roger Corman) seemed to be the channel's cheesy opus, but now it looks like SyFy is trying to outdo itself with Mega Python Vs. Gatoroid, which stars 80s pop stars Tiffany and Debbie Gibson.

Here's the movie's plot, in a nutshell:

A fanatical animal rights advocate (Debbie Gibson) steals illegally imported exotic snakes from pet stores and sets them free in the Florida Everglades, where they grow and thrive in alarming sizes. Seeing this as an ecological threat to the Everglades, a female park ranger (Tiffany) injects the swamp's alligators with large amounts of steroids, increasing their size to combat the snakes. This results in a colossal reptilian battle that threatens all of Florida.

This sounds both amazing and delightful, though I'm not sure what's harder to believe: that reptiles can get that big or that Tiffany can convincingly play a park ranger who can manipulate animals' genetics. One of the big selling points to this movie has been that the two pop stars will get into a major cat fight while wearing skimpy dresses. As a result, <a href=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jg6x_C7Ii_U>SyFy's recently released a teaser video of the scene.

Mega Python vs. Gatoroid is set to air at 9 PM EST this Saturday.

Honestly SyFy has lost all interest for me. Especially after they changed their name. It was then that I realised that SyFy crushes all good series and when they accidentally get a good one, they milk it till its worse than a dried husk. (See Amazing Screw on Head Pilot and Stargate series for examples). When will we get an actual SciFi/Fantasy channel?

Oh Gods, sometimes I wish we had SyFy in Canada, just because of how terrible the movies are. I remember watching 10.5 and [ii]Yeti[/i] while visiting the states. They were hilariously bad.

Syfy (which is an abomination in its name alone), has gotten extremely stupid in recent times. Honestly, I feel that their change in name kinda reflects that.

I sometimes wonder if the people responsible for these cinematic abominations are setting out to make bad movies on purpose (which they have definitely succeeded at), or if they're actually trying to make quality cinema and they just really suck at it. Either way, hilarity ensues!

Got your facts wrong there - Roger Corman was involved in "Sharktopus", but he was the producer, not the director.

Must. Decide. CAnnot. Decide.

Can there be too much cheese?

Can I live with the shame of...watching Psiffy?

But the Tiffany/Debbie may not be the ones you remember...

For those of you who have never heard of "Amazing Screw on Head" watch part one here and weep in sadness for a show that never got produced.

I really would like to be in the crowd that enjoys the "So bad it's good" things. I just can't. Syfy has some really solid shows but 3/24 is not that great. You get these monstrosities, reruns of failed bad shows, reruns of successful shows but have been seen 100 times and paid advertisement to supplement the 3 or so hours of good programming.

I love how at the very end, Syfy isn't even ashamed of showing the green screen animation title haha!!! Syfy movies look like last gen video games and typically have the plot of a last gen video game fanfic written by an eleven year old.

Seriously, "Gatoroid?" It sounds like the next logical step for Gatorade's product line if the whole "steroid abuse" situation becomes the accepted norm.

And everyone knows that if you have a problem with Gatoroids, the best solution is to reach for a bulk sized tube of soothing Preparation H: Industrial Grade!

WHY WASN'T THAT MADE!!! You have just made me very depressed, and it is just the start of the day. Wewewolves hardly ever get anything decent in terms of screen time. [sub]They are my favourite... T_T[/sub]
