Battlestar Galactica Online Beta Launching Soon

Gamers are going to get a chance to check out Battlestar Galactica Online pretty soon, thanks to an open beta that's starting in a couple of weeks.

At the moment, we're firmly in the midst of a dearth of Battlestar Galactica television programming thanks to the death of Caprica and the fact that the upcoming prequel, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/105534-Capricas-Final-Episodes-Will-See-Light-of-Day>Blood & Chrome has yet to receive an air date. Fans of the TV series will probably be relieved to hear that Syfy's tie-in MMO, Battlestar Galactica Online is starting its open beta very soon.

The free-to-play MMO's open beta is set to start February 8. The game is going to be playable on the Web, and will allow players to engage in what looks like some fierce space combat action. Players will be able to play as either humans or Cylons, pilot ships, wander through space stations, and even hang out with major characters from the TV series.

For a web-based MMO, the game's gameplay trailer features some pretty solid graphics. if you're interested in being a part of the beta, head over to the game's official site and sign up.

While I'm all for using popular culture as MMO jumping points, (DCU seems good and I'm still waiting on that Firefly MMO...) this seems like a *bizarre* choice for a setting.

I can certainly see the potential as far as the BSG universe is concerned, but I can only wonder exactly where they take the game play. Survivors on Caprica? New colonies? Or just constant fighting between the flotilla and pursuing cylon fleet?

I could really imagine all kinda of ways to make this an amazing experience, but after Star Trek I can't really say I'm optimistic.

Looks pretty solid, but does it have some good quests and story to follow? If it is just an excuse to go out in a viper or raider and shoot things, then it is gonna fizzle real quick.

Looks pretty good. Graphics are great, Space combat looks fun. And Adama looks to have lost 10 years.

That was my jaw hitting the floor. Now all they need to do is get on to CCP and get this running in a way like EVE:Online and you have the greatest Space MMO ever made.

Speaking of Big Point Games. Has anyone ever played any of their products? I'm not sure I've heard of a single one of their titles. Ever.

Looks like the real-world space physics of the show are out, to be replaced by George Lucas style swooping. The first time I saw a Viper spin on a dime while conserving forward momentum, I actually stood up and cheered

Um, that's weird news. I have been in this beta for months...
Granted there isn't a ton to it at the moment....

Super Spoiler alert btw - Well it looks like it will be set in sort of the 'Razor' era, eg. that minut point that didn't exist for very long, before Baltar announced his candidacy for the presidency and after Lee Adama becomes Commander of Pegasus. So there'd be frozen in time, at that point fighting cylons, stretching it with missions and interactions with the main characters for smaller side missions.

Quests? Quests?.. 'Quests'? No, no 'Quests' will exist, no classes will exist, this won't be WoBSG, you'll be either Colonial or Cylon, and since we know who all of the first seven and final five cylons are, we can't be any of those either (they're main characters anyway).

And tbh, I thought the space graphics were fine, but the people graphics were rather dismal.
