Portal-Loving Seamstress Creates Cuddly Personality Cores

[vimeo=10766107]

Few things are more special than spending some quality time snuggling up with parts taken from a murderous AI.

As much as you might want to, you're never going to be able to get your hands on a real Personality Core. Even if they weren't fictional, getting bits of GLaDOS out of the Aperture Science facilities would be practically impossible. If you're willing to settle for huggable, plush facsimiles, however, then Etsy user Katy "Penguinotic" Creider has you covered.

The Personality Core set consists of four plush spheres of slightly different designs. The first is a morality core, the second a curiosity core, the third an intelligence core, and the fourth an anger core. Three of the four cores have a voice box mounted behind their eye, which allows them to say their lines from Portal. Quite appropriately, it's the morality core that remains silent. Each sphere is made of fleece with felt and ribbon accents, and has a circumference of roughly 26".

Creider has actually been making the Personality Core plushies for a while, but she only began selling them in the last few months, and it's only in the last few days that she's started to sell them as a set. You can buy the anger [http://www.etsy.com/listing/59814504/portal-glados-core-talking-anger-sphere] and curiosity [http://www.etsy.com/listing/60004174/portal-glados-core-talking-curiosity] cores separately for $45, or you can buy the whole set [http://www.etsy.com/listing/58881610/portal-glados-cores-complete-set-ver-10?ref=pr_shop] for $150.

WOW! $45 for a cloth ball barely larger than my fist, just what I always wanted!

I love how the seller has the balls to charge for shipping at that insane price.

If the guy who makes Minecraft blocks can do it for $10, she definitely doesn't deserve more than $25 for this.

If she did $45 worth of work on this, she's doing it wrong, because it is not worth $45 for a single one of these cloth balls.

EDIT: Actually, add in $10 for the talking (one of those recorders you shove in Teddy Bears costs about $9) That brings it to $35, at the most

EDITEDIT: Wait wait wait wait. She still charges $45 for the silent one? Wow.

Even if the price was irrelevant, I wonder if she'll get shut down by copyright lawyers now that she's gone public... I somehow doubt that she's got a licence to the IP or whatever...

I don't think so, she's handmaking them, hardly a production line.

Still, it would be much safer if she called it something different.

Tbh the price is most likely what Valves' price on them would be if they made them instead. Valve store is so damn expensive ;_;

And I don't think she's allowed to sell them either, copyright and all that even if it is on a small scale...maybe Valve will buy the "idea" from here...idk =/

I like the idea and I would buy one if it weren't for the price.

Interested in the full set? You get a discount! All four cores/spheres would come to $150. That's a savings of $20!
Too bad the shipping costs to Germany are $30, more than is saved by buying them all!

Awesome...To bad it is so expensive.

And won't she get sued by Valve? Or get a C&D?

I don't think Valve is the kind of company that would chase down someone for something like this.

OT: D'awww. I wants one!

I want one so badly...

One set, that is.

If I had a crazy amount of money to burn ('cause that amount is a literal fortune in my books, plus whatever shipping fees they'd charge to send it to the UK) then you can bet I'd waste it on those odd little balls of cloth.

She'd more likely get offered a job or something by valve to help design and make more plushies and merch.

Someone on the replica props forum made a core out of a hamster ball and some scraps of metal and electronics. The price of the plush one is a bit high, but I could be tempted into trying to make one of my own or making a hamster ball core.

Their hunter plush is WAY more complex then this, and it's $15 cheaper.

They aren't made in Korea by children. That's what westerners cost for labour.

More special *than*. That one really grates with me.

These do look quite good fun though.

Thats nice and everything, but its so expensive no matter how, where or why it was made. Id rather stick to my set of eight sticky bomb plushies that I bought for a practical joke.

Admittedly I love these, but damn, they're expensive -- $45? For one? I could buy an actual game for that. It baffles me how people think they can charge so much just because it's handmade. It was probably $10 for a voice box and around $5 for material, right? And that doesn't even apply to the silent one; and the cost of materials, decorations etc. can decrease surprisingly when you gather a 'collection' of leftovers. Hell, I could make these myself.

Also, I love how they try to justify spending over a hundred dollars on cuddly toys by saying "BUT you save $30!"
