Nintendo Muzzles Miyamoto

Nintendo [http://www.nintendo.com] has slapped a gag on legendary designer Shigeru Miyamoto over concerns that he may accidentally spill the beans on Nintendo's next big idea.

The order focuses specifically on Miyamoto's hobbies, which have thus far been absolute gold for Nintendo. His love of puzzles laid the foundation for the runaway success of the Brain Training phenomenon on the Wii Fit [http://www.nintendo.com/ds]. It appears that Miyamoto has a magic touch for turning what he likes to do into things everybody likes to do, and as a result, Nintendo doesn't want him talking about what he likes to do anymore.

Claiming that "any glimpse inside his head could be worth billions," the Times Online [http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/technology/article4488157.ece] says, "Even the most fleeting insight into how Mr. Miyamoto is spending his work or play-time is creating huge interest. In short, the gaming and investment communities are wondering which of his current pastimes will be translated into a virtual rendition that will attract millions of sales five years from now."

Of course, Miyamoto has done more with his time at Nintendo than just turn his hobbies into Mount Fuji-sized piles of cash. Among his credits are Star Fox [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donkey_Kong_(video_game)] and numerous other hit Nintendo properties. Miyamoto's "touch" is unrivaled in the industry, so it's no wonder Nintendo doesn't want him talking too much; he might accidentally sneeze and get money on people.

I actually just read about this (in many less words) on Gametrailers, but the comment about sneezing made my day. Anyway, from a business perspective, I understand why they would do this. Most of his games are inspired by his hobbies, so it makes sense. However, it still saddens me that they would go so far as to stop him from talking about his hobbies.

This man enjoys himself and the whole world is entranced and also amused by it. Personally, I'd love to see what the man things from inside his head. Unfortunately, I feel I'd just get run over by some sort of Japanese-gabbling, speeding train of thought.

I find this sad and amusing at the same time. I guess I can understand why Nintendo might do this but it's still just silly.

Not to sound too morbid, but I wonder where Nintendo will be when Miyamoto kicks the bucket, God forbid. I mean, is he really still the sole reason for their success?

Theres also Sakuri.
Is he the one who came up with Kid Icarus and Metroid?

I'm not too terribly concerned about missing out on his hobbies, really, but I do think it's unfortunate that companies are getting this paranoid. Rights to game titles are another issue. Did id really need to keep holding the rights to Commander Keen? Does EA still need System Shock, really? Does Nintendo really need to lock down its publishing rights on Goldeneye?

It always bums me out when companies get overprotective of their properties and ideas like this.

I feel sorry for Mr.Potatomoto, not being able to promise us the world and collapse under the weight of his own lofty goals, like Peter Molyneaux.

so they just want him to become a hermit? ok, how about he just creates a big concrete house and never leaves it. would that make them happy? i think they are going to far on this one. they need to ease up. let him live the way he wants. if they stop his life, they stop his ideas.

The next big game Miyamoto makes will be the "Wii Escape: Flee from your Nintendo prison." You will take your Mii and try to break out of the windowless concrete bunker along with Miyamoto's Mii and try to get your awesome game ideas to the outside world.
