Max Payne Maker Joins the Angry Birds Team

Remedy co-founder Petri Järvilehto, whose credits include Angry Birds [http://www.amazon.com/Alan-Wake-Xbox-360/dp/B0010AYJXI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1297127586&sr=8-1] to consoles.

Rovio Mobile [http://www.rovio.com/] is a Finnish game studio best known for creating Angry Birds, the smash hit game for the iPhone and Android mobile devices which has sold more than 12 million copies on Apple's App Store alone. Petri Järvilehto is a Finnish game developer best known for helping introduce the world to "bullet time" as the project lead, designer and programmer on the hyper-violent Max Payne games. Obviously, it's a match made in Heaven.

So it is that Järvilehto has joined Rovio as the senior vice president for console development, with the responsibility of overseeing the development of console versions of Angry Birds. Direct ports of the game are already available for the PC and Mac, and as a PlayStation Mini for the PlayStation 3 and PSP, but the addition of Järvilehto suggests the studio has something bigger in mind for the future.

"We want to make Angry Birds a long lasting global gaming franchise, and we see the console platforms as a way of delivering an even more entertaining, powerful and involving experience," Rovio CEO Mikael Hed said in a statement. "Petri has an outstanding track record and we're thrilled to have him take the lead of our console development."

"I think we're only in the beginning, and with consoles we have the opportunity to create a new kind of gaming experience," added Järvilehto.

Along with his position at Rovio, Järvilehto will remain on the board of directors at Remedy [http://www.remedygames.com/]. Rovio's new console edition of Angry Birds is expected to feature birds moving in slow-motion, angst-ridden pigs and hand-drawn, barnyard noir cutscenes, and will probably be out sometime in 2018.

Last I heard "Angry Birds" was a term used by soldiers in the military, and until this post I never knew there was a game like this. I don't have games on my phone, I don't have any handhelds anymore and I've never really enjoyed them so guess not for me...

The reason Angry Birds did so well on the mobile was because it was accessible, intuitive control scheme and perfect for mobiles. It won't work on consoles or on the PC, at least not as well. There's several flash games online with the same principle of Angry Birds that have been around for years, and they lose their appeal after a few levels.

In other news, Angry Birds 2 has been confirmed to include terrible, frustrating, flow-breaking dream sequences with no colors but red and black.

I want to play a version of Angry Birds where you launch Max Payne through the air while he's dual wielding deagles, shooting his way through the wooden structures.

Does this REALLY need to be on Consoles? You've played one ballistic physics puzzle you've played them all.

None of the elements of the game require the hardware of a console, so why bother?

I was a little puzzled by the need to bring it to consoles too, given that I can get essentially the same gameplay free on Kongregate. (Other places too, I'm sure.)

Then again, Angry Birds with a slo-mo dual-wield diving mechanic does have some appeal. So I'm going to keep an open mind about it.

I don't think this is a good idea. Angry Birds is a distraction when your waiting in the doctors office, it's not something most people would sit down at home and play, at least I don't think so. I could be wrong, but I think the strength of the game was how accessible it was on your phone. There is a version for every smartphone out there. I don't know why a company would think this would translate onto a console or the PC. I know I certainly wouldn't buy it.

Hyper-violent? Really? I wouldn't have said Max Payne was any worse than any other 3rd person shooter in terms of violence.

True, but I just attributed it to the humorous tone of the article.

In any case, I have to admit I am interested in what they'll do to the game. Not on any platforms I own, but the results could be amusing!

Wait, we're still talking about the game where you catapult exploding birds at pictures of pigs' heads?

Entertaining? Yeah, sure, why not. But powerful and involving? I doubt putting it on a console is suddenly going to make it more invigorating and immersive a game

2018?! SERIOUSLY? Come on. That's way too long a development time for a freaking iPhone port.
