Artist Turns 46 Gaming Icons Into a Space Invader

An artist has taken inspiration from gaming's most iconic characters to create a piece called Invaded.

Artist Becky Dreistadt has created a videogaming masterpiece. The headquarters of New Zealand-based Space Invader [http://www.gameplanet.co.nz].

Technically, it's made of 48 characters, because Dreistadt included Sam & Max, while Cloud from Final Fantasy VII [http://www.amazon.com/Final-Fantasy-VII-Playstation/dp/B00000JRSB/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1298326955&sr=8-1] brought a Chocobo with him. Each pixel of the Space Invader is made of one image.

Invaded features other characters like Mario, Sonic, Sub Zero, Pac-Man, and Pikachu. Some are performing cute actions, like how Donkey Kong is blowing on a dandelion, Diablo [http://www.amazon.com/Diablo-III-Pc/dp/B00178630A] is petting a cow, and Gordon Freeman is eating that cake that wasn't a lie after all. I don't recognize a couple of the characters off the top of my head, like the girl eating a hamburger and the man smoking a cigarette, but I'm sure they're painfully obvious and I shouldn't have admitted that.

Dreistadt and her partner Frank Gibson run a website called Tiny Kitten Teeth [http://www.tinykittenteeth.com/] where they have an ongoing webcomic and links to their other works. After Invaded, I wouldn't mind seeing more from the duo that draws from the realm of videogames.

Wow, I recognize all of them. It's a veritable slice of gaming history! I approve.

What I don't approve of, however, is the lack of Kerrigan.

Now that is just fantastic; interesting way of getting Half-Life and Portal together in one fell swoop, and I approve of having the Heavy, Sam and Max, and Manny Calvera in there as well.

Also, who's that guy right after Duke Nukem in his underwear? That was one of the only ones I didn't get.

You forgot the duckhunt dog has a duck with it, and Link had Navi with him. That brings the total up to an even 50.

I think this looks awesome. I really love his characterizations.

It's Arthur, from Ghosts 'N Goblins of course :)

I also don't get the guy with the cigarette or the food-munching girl. My guesses were the guy from Red Dead Redemption and Fat Princess, but having played neither of those I just have no idea. Anyone want to clue us in?

Also my first thought was that Diablo was petting a unicorn, but it does look more like a cow. It just looked like it had a tiny horn.

I'm going to actually say 49, because it's not nice to count Mario twice.

Also, I'm pretty sure that Becky is a she.

I missed the same two as the article's author, so I don't feel all bad. It took a second glance at the one on the bottom left for me to realize who he is.

Alex Kidd is the hamburger chomper, and I believe the smoking guy is old Jimmy Raynor(?). To be fair, if that is Jim Raynor, he should be chomping down on a cigar with a shot of whiskey and not a cigarette.

EDIT:

To be fair, if that is Jim Raynor, he should be chomping down on a cigar with a triple whiskey and not a cigarette.
Oops! Fix'd.

Jimmy Raynor aka the "hero" of the Starcraft franchise and the picture's inspired from this artwork

Oh, is that all? A bunch of arranged tiles?

I was expecting video game characters re-imagined as Space Invader-esque enemies.

Kinda like that one a while back with the Pokemon as cosplay costumes.

I guess that's because he already put in Jim Raynor.
Eh, I like Raynor and all, but I think Kerrigan is more emblematic of the series. She's on Brood War's box art, after all.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who had trouble with Jim Raynor (who I knew I would beat myself up over not knowing once I found out who it was, and I did) and the kid eating. :p
